.44 bullets

Looking to reload some vicious (hog) hunting loads, probably with Gold Dot HPs. My question is what weight should I go with? Thanks.

    Hey all,

    I have a simple and quick question for you. Can you fire a .44 caliber bullet(with a .430 diameter) out of a .44 or .444 without having to make any modifications? I know that most .44 caliber bullets have a diameter of .429, but have heard of people firing bullets with a .430 diameter out of this rifles. Can anybody help me?

    For hogs I would use a heavy cast solid. Either a 280 or 300 grain.

    you say "probably with Gold Dot HPs" & I take it you mean hollow points. hollow point bullets are designed to make a large shallow wound that imparts all the avalible energy to the target as in knock down force. for an effective hunting bullet you want it to penetrate to the vital organs. DO NOT EVER, I say NOT EVER use hollow point bullets for hunting. they will do excessive surface damage (creating meat loss) & quite possably fail to kill cleanly resulting in the possability of losing the animal.

    rimfire72 is on target with his advice of heavy, solid bullets for optimum penitration.

    in order of importance for hunting;
    shot placement, aim for the vitals (neck or heart)
    a bullet that will penetrate

    I would have to agree that for Hog hunting you want a very tough bullet because the game that you are hunting is a very mean, nasty , tough animal, but on the other hand if you are hunting a thin skined animal like a smaller white tail deer then a HP will work just fine

    Can't be said enough...no HP's and as heavy as you can.
    I use hard-cast 255 to 300gr SWC w/GC in my 44 Mag. Good penetration, wound channel more than adequate.

    Solids suggested would be good too....or FMJ

    I used 240gr SP factory ammo on one occasion. Two shots from a poor angle of about 30 degrees from looking down his nostrils...one shed the jacket in the hide, one shed the jacket that was never found. The remaining lead from both did a fair enough job, but it was not quick. In the end, my gun was on the ground and I had found my squirrel insticts.

    Make bacon...not crutches.

    I made the mistake once of using 300 HP in my 45-70 when I went hog hunting. Yes, it dropped him, but lost a LOT of meat.
