Garand?

I bought 2 garands they are NRA Very Good. How ever I found
a small spot of braze where the brl. meets the rec. at about
2:00 oclock same size same place. spot is about 1/32". Both
rifles had the piston nut drilled out, so the would only work
as bolt actions.
I removed the braze no problems under the spot and replaced
the nuts. They shoot just fine. One is an H&R one is a very
early Spfld. Does anyone know why this would have been done?
These were bought from an estate of military rifles auction.

    Ranger..... Hard to tell why someone would do that to a Garand. My guess is maybe it was to use them as ceremonial rifles shooting blanks and they did not want to use blank adaptors with the guns so decided to make them manually operated only.

    Mark Christian may have some insight as to why this was done.

    Blank adapters are restrictions, so the pressure will be higher and allow the weapon to cycle.

    Not using blank adapters will give the same effect as drilling out the nut. It won't cycle.


    Could be they didn't want an automatic, kind of to save cartridges - conserve shots.

    That is sometimes done here, people buy an automatic, have the piston removed and gas-bleed welded shut.
    I'd be darned if I know why they do that.

    THESE WHERE MODIFIED BUT THE ARMY FOR A V.F.W. FIRING SQUAD (OUR LOCAL V.F.W. HAS TEN OF THESE) THAT I HAD TO REACIVATE SO THE 'OLD GUYS' DIDN'T HAVE TO MANUALY OPERATE THE ACTIONS WHEN FIRING BLANKS. THE 'SPOT OF BRAZE' IS ACTUALY STEEL WELD, AND WOULD HAVE TO BE GROUND OFF TO REBARREL THE RIFLE.

    Do not fire these rifles! I say again-do not fire these rifles!
    Any heat unknown on the receivers is looking for absolute trouble.
    My WAG is that the receivers or barrel threads are a mess. The spot weld or braze was to hold the two parts together. Thus making a blank firing rifle. The metallurgy has been jeoparized. Judge them unsafe.

    101;THE SPOT OF WELD IS AT THE BARREL RECIEVER JUNCTION AND SERVES TO PREVENT EASY BARREL REMOVAL (SMALL SPOT). I DO AGREE THAT THESE RIFLES SHOULD NOT BE FIRED WITH BALL AMMO, HOWEVER BLANKS ARE OK AS THE PRESSURES ARE MUCH LOWER. I DID TEST FIRE THEM WITH M-2 BALL AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW GAS SYSTEM PARTS BUT CONSIDERED THIS PROOF FIRING. AND YES: OUR V.F.W. HAS A FIRING SQUAD (AND A 100% MEMBER RETENTION RATE)[:D]
