    Actually, I believe this information to be false.

    I've been told that if you fire a gun underwater the increased sound conductivity of the water (compared to air) will actually make the gunshot sound several times louder than had the identical shot been fired in the air.

    With a .22 you could probably get away with this, but I wouldn't try it with any bigger caliber unless silenced, which sort of defeats the purpose of this exercise.

    Actually I wouldnt try this stunt at all since it seems like a good way to blow your gun up and get killed.

    If anyone has actually tried this, or seen it done, I'd love to hear about it. I know the Navy SEALS have a modified pistol that they shoot underwater, and that Glocks have been modified to shoot underwater by porting the firing pin to lower the water resistance, but again, I dont know how these sound or what steps (if any) need to be taken to prevent the gun or the firer's eardrums from blowing up.
