accurixzing the m14

does anybody know of any good efficient ways to make my m1a national match more accurate without spending a lot of money?

    trigger job, polish the gas piston, increase the muzzle brake exit hole, grease the op rod where it touches the nm bbl, silicon mount the handguard, make sure the bbl is floated and the receiver is glassed into the stock, double lug the receiver, sand your mags to fit the mag well. what is you bbl? 10/1-4, etc..?

    bobski, what is a bbl? and what do you mean by double lugging my receiver?

    bbl: standard computer abbrv. for barrel.
    double lugging is where the receiver is bolted into the stock with allen screws front and rear.

    i'll a bet dollar to a donut your nm m1A is already floated. look forward under your gas assy where it comes in contact with your forward most part of your stock. squeeze the stock up towards your bbl. did it move? its floated. you must keep that area greased lightly on the inside of that little lip of metal just below the gas assy and the stock hardware. it look like a horseshoe. see it? the gap is only about 10,000th of an inch after it flexes back to its tight position. its so min'ute, it actually is floating on the grease. when you double lug a receiver, it only makes contact back in the mag well and no where on the forward stock assy. look inside your mag well. can you see an allen screw anywhere forward under the chamber or in the rear ahead of the trigger guard? drop your trigger assy and see if you see one in the rear of the receiver going into the stock assy. nm m1a's should have been 'lugged'. bet ya you got at least one of them!

    yes, i see what your talking about. i didnt know much about this gun untill about a month ago, it was my dads. when i shot it i was kind of dissapointed. it shot 3 inch groups, and i didnt know if it was me or the gun. its kind of cold out now so i guess il wait untill next year to really see what the thing can do. Do you reccomend that i get the stock bedded with something? will that improve anything?

    well, im good enough to shoot 1 moa with a 1 moa gun, but then again, im no sniper. i am using a pretty cheap burris scope, 4-12 power, currently shooting at just a hundred yards. And i thought that all nm m1a's were 1 in 11"..?, i may be wrong, il check it out tomorow just to be 100%. also, do you know the approximate cost of a glass bedding job?

    that rules out some of the variables though you didn't mention the ammo type. You can accopmlish the bedding yourself if you take your time. auto body glass works fine. a dremel, a can of break free, walah! Fulton armory has a site and they have levels of accurcy but its pricey.
    the question of bedding --- the stock is inletted for the reciever to exact tolerences but wood can only be machined so close and with recoil and disassembly the reciever will only stay so tight so long. with glass bedding the inletting is opened up slightly in certain areas and is filled with fiberglass the reciever is coated with a film of spray lube of some sort and as soon as the fiberglass is set you break the action free from the stock and trim any excess material that may have flowed where it does not belong. having owned a SA supposed ultra match I know they only rear lug their recievers and they don't bolt it. double lugs are custom.

    its gotta be you and the ammo. the nm is a moa gun. i find it hard to believe your s.a. nm isnt already bedded. did you see the allen screws i mentioned? odds are, if its lugged, its bedded too.

    ok, i think we have two different ideas on the concept of "bedding". maby i misunderstood what you mean by bedding. what excactly is it? and does the type of bedding make a difference?

    you screw the receiver into the bedding material as part of the process. if a gun is bedded, the bbl is NOT touching the stock at all.
