Winchester model 24 SxS
I am the new proud owner of a well used Model 24. It is a 12Ga., one barrel full, and the other modified chokes.
I have always wanted a SxS, a complication of too many John Wayne movies. I am not much of a shotgunner. More of a rifle man.
What would be the primary use for this shotgun? It has 28" barrels, so I am thinking birding.

Assuming a gun of this era is safe in all other respects, can modern lead or steel 2 3/4" shells be shot out of a Winchester Model 24 sxs? 0 -
Being unfamiliar with the model, I defer to others who study the Winchester line. Condition is everything and considering they made these from 1940 to 1957, I would guess the war time models would be worth more. Blue Book says 100% $650, 98% $575, 95% $425, 90% $300, 80% $225, 70% $175, 60% $150. add 40% for being bored 20 gauge. Notice the values drop off rather quickly for any thing with much wear on it. There are considerations for age, ect. but be real sure about condition. Your 80% might be my 95% and vice versa. Regional variations of value might make it worth more in one area over another, i.e. Winchesters sell very well west of me, but Remingtons bring as much or more near here, on a apples for apples basis. 0 -
I have a pre-war 24 in 20 ga. with 26 in. barrels that I use as my "lousy weather" bird gun instead of my Fox Sterlingworth. It had some blue wear on the barrels which I touched up. Paid $250 for it last year and I think I got a good deal. It isn't pretty, but swings nicely and has gotten it's share of birds. The extractors are a supposed weak point, but I haven't had any problems with field loads. If it's available at a decent price, I'd pick it up. -Asa 0 -
Hello Hunt! Well as with most old Winchesters, barrel length and choke(s) are important. 12ga. guns were first delivered to the warehouse in April of 1939, and the following year the 16&20 ga. guns came out. 20 ga. guns in "excellent" condition are hard to find, most were used hard. Not many options offered, one being the solid red winchester recoil pad, I've seen one Md 24 that was special ordered with checkered stocks from the factory, in the last 30 years. If your 20ga gun is all original, (not reblued) $500-$1000. 24s with short barrels 26 in 16/20ga guns with Imp/cyl and Mod. chokes will bring the most, longer barrels with Full and Mod. bring less. Total production for the Md 24 was about 117,000, and it was known as the "Poor Mans" md 21. some people will pay more for a "War" time gun, serial number 43800 and below. Some of the early guns had more figure in the walnut, than the late 40s and 50s guns and that could help over just straight grained walnut. Parts are very hard to find in 20ga. guns so take care of it. Regards Dave 0 -

This shotgun belongs to a friends dad who purchased it new in the early 50's. He has the remainder of the original 1 box of shells that he bought with the gun and it is in excellent condition, he's asking $450 for the gun. Thanks again!0 -

I know this is an old topic, but I have a Winchester Model 24 20 Gauge that I'm thinking about selling and I just wanted to get a feel for how much it's worth. It's in very good condition Serial 47015, 28" barrel. Have pictures if that would help.
