Southgate Muzzleloader
I recently acquired a flintlock muzzleloader made by R. Southgate. Does anyone know where I can find information about this man and how much this rifle may be worth? it is in optimum condition.

I looked in my Data Base and find No R. Southgate listed as a Firearm Maker therein...Is this Gun of recent Manufacture or an Antique?...A complete and Total discription might be of some help!......

R. Southgate was a builder of modern Muzzleloading rifles. He was from Ohio I think. Mr. Southgate was killed in the late 70's or early 80's during a National Match in Friendship,In when the powder magazine exploded.
The rifle is a sought after collectible but I can't put a price on it. Perhaps someone else can help.0 -
If I had to guess I would say that the gun was probably made in the 50's or 60's. My great uncle Les Huffstuttler originally purchased the gun from Roy, as they were friends and fellow competitors. I have been able to find out that his full name was Roycelyn "Roy" Southgate and that he may be from Tennessee. It is a full length long rifle with full stock of curly maple. There is a number of 805 on the spine if the barrel near the flash pan. 0 -
If You know any serious Black Powder Shooters, You might consider contacting Him/Them and locate a copy of the MUZZLE BLAST Magazine..You'll probably have better luck in finding information on the Gun Maker R. Southgate.......
