I am looking to buy a gun safe. can any one tell me where to look for the best prices, also, any suggestions as to brand?

I seem to go on intermittent spurts on this site--kids and sports sometimes keeps me away for much longer than I'd like---but anyway--I have seen a couple of recent post regarding safes. I had an awesome experience on this topic several years ago and had a great conversation with many members on the subject so thought I would submit the archive link so our new members can view it.
A safe has to be a deterrent on three levels, weight, fire protection and entry protection. I hope the link below helpes those who are seeking an above average safe.

You used the term "fire proof." Back when I was heavy into dealing, I sold several lines of safes. The best we could do then was "fire resistant" safes-- safes that would protect contents from heat up to a certain temperature for a certain amount of time. I presume it's the same now, unless you're ready to spend mega-bucks.
In my opinion, if you live in town, where you have trained firefighters that can get to a burning house in a few minutes, a safe without any fire protection is about as good as you can get. Unless a house burns for quite a while, the contents of a safe on the ground floor won't suffer much, if any, heat damage.
If there is a fire, one of the biggest hazards for guns is smoke. Smoke from house fires is extremely corrosive, and that corrosion can cause a lot of damage to guns if not cleaned pronto.

Also check your local gun dealer, Tractor Supply, Midway (on line) do a web search for gun safes, Bass Pro Shop, Cabella's. Look around before you buy, you just might find one close to $500.00. You might also check with your local locksmith, found a real bargin on a safe a few years back at one. Good luck. 0 -
Buy one without "fire proofing" and install dry wall--it's the same thing the companies do, but at a fraction of the cost.

eastwood has it right. They add dry wall or concrete board, as the moisture in the plaster board is part of the fire rating. This also reduces cubic volume and increases dead weight. I don't think they claim "fire proof", just that it extends the time of resistance and temperature. Try also your area home centers(Menard's, Home Depot), Sam's Club had them a while ago and also try farm implement dealers like John Deere and Case International as they are offered in their parts catalogs. Some will order if you ask but they don't like to stock such. They come palletted more than one, so you might have go together with a couple other guys to get a deal. Check also some of the bigger gun shows. They've been showing up lately and if you take a pickup or trailer, might get a deal if they don't have to haul it home. www.midwayusa.com also has specials from time to time and usually includes freight to your door(not into the house, tho) 0 -
Kershey01, I was asking the same question a few months ago. I almost bought a Sentry safe from Wal-Mart for about $350.00. But I kept looking around, and learned if I wanted something to last a lifetime I'd have to spend more money, even if it meant saving a bit longer.
Saving some money by buying something cheaper might seem good at the time, but what happens if you have a fire or attempted theft?
Say I buy the Sentry safe, then later have a fire or attempted theft? The safe is now damaged and needs a safe expert to at least open it at my home. Since it's damaged, it will need to be transported to the factory for repair. Who pays for this? YOU DO !

I bought a Cannon Model AE22. It holds either 14 or 28 long guns depending on how you set up the inside. I bought the safe for %699.00 and the shipping was $150.00. The save company set up the shipping. I've had the safe for about 2 months, and the shipping company has yet to bill me for the shipping. (maybe they won't, lol)
Yes, I had to scrape up some more money. But if something ever happens, it won't cost me a cent!

Looking for a gunsafe, I found that the delivery cost of a safe was a major part of the overall cost. Fire was not considered since it was to go into the basement. I had a safe, an iron locker, made by an outfit that builds dump truck bodies. Made of 1/8" sheet iron, cost me a lot less and they delivered it. Might be worth looking into. 0
