Is it safe to shoot steel shot in model 12 3" duck gun with a full choke?

    Welcome to the forum tdl10x! In a nut shell, NO! Over time the "Full" choke will open up. Shooting steel through it is like hitting it with a hammer, steel shot does not compress like lead shot does. If you want to use it for waterfowl hunting, use Bismuth or Tungsten/Matrix they are both softer and comparible to lead shot. You have a gun worth at least $400, don't ruin it with steel shot.

    Thank you for the reply. During the spring and summer I bought a 3" m12 with a poly choke. I sent the front end to Carlsons and they installed a set of choke tubes for steel shot. I believe I now have the perfect waterfowl gun. the reason I asked the original question was I hoped that would work guess not.

    If your Model 12 was modified to use screw in choke tubes (specifically made for steel shot), then you can indeed go ahead and shoot it regardless of the choke setting. Your inital post/question did not contain enough information for Dave (only winchesters) to be able to answer it properly... e.g. the fact that you had the gun modified.

    too bad you didnt leave that polychoke on. its a lot faster to twist in a choke than screw out and screw in a screw in choke. birds can fly pretty far in 2 minutes...that is, if you hadnt dropped the choke in the water, then make it 30 minutes as you fish for it![:D]
