scope mounts

hi

i am putting a scope on a new rifle.a friend said to use high mounts.now i always mount my scopes as close to the barrel as i can get.always thought that would be more acurate.Listening to my friend i was curious if it matters?Thinking about triing it but it does not seem like it would be beneficial to me.woundering what othere people think. thanks for the time.

    will the rings on a muzzelloader handel the recoil of a 7 mm rem mag
    the reason I ask is I have a muzzelloader that the rings will work perfect on my 7 mm

    A plus would be to lap the rings for perfect alinment. Then myself I use a level to level the the gun in a gun vise, then level the scope as well. This will help to eliminate canting issues. If you don't have scope squaring tools.

    Then when I torqe the screws I use a cross patern. It helps to have a micro torqe wrench that reads in inch pounds. Night force sells one for about $75. along with lapping tools. (Midway usa is cheaper).

    In general most scopes are selected to be appropriate in several way for the intended rifle. Scopes should not be too large, too heavy or to powerful for the intended use. The 17HMR is a fine little round, but it isn't a 22-250. The 77/17HMR is a very petite package which might be better served with a compact 4-12 of some sort. Still if the 6-18 is what you have and want to use, go for it. Scopes are generally mounted as low as posible the barrel and still have the bolt cycle. They also need to be "square" with the axis as well. A good way to get this is to dismount the action from the stock and make a level plate for the action, aluminum is best but wood can also work. Mount the action to a flat plate and lock it up in a vise after leveling it with a 6" topedo level, hopefully a good one. Next hang a plumb bob out in front of the barrel to look at thru the scope, on it lowest setting. If the plate is level and the vertical axis is parallel with the plumbline it should be very square. Bore sight it and go to the range. Have fun...........
