MARK CHRIST. / CHILEAN NAVAL JOHNSON RIFLE ???
we have a customer who has the chance to by a JOHNSON RIFLE from a private collection. he is currently on buisness in CHILE and emailed me a rather short description of the rifle in question...
from his description the JOHNSON RIFLE is chambered in 7X57MM MAUSER and has the CHILEAN NAVAL CREST on the reciever. i am unfamiler with JOHNSON rifle foriegn contract sales, and was unaware of any alternate chamberings...
can you shed any light on this piece with the sadly lacking information provided here???
he estimates condition at 85%...
the cost works out to approximatly $875.00 US...
i am unsure wether he can inport this piece from CHILE.

I'm no expert on this subject, but I wouldn't get my hopes up in being able to import this rifle.

the guys buisness is import / export of agriculteral machinery for one of the top 5 north american producers of these implements. he thinks that his industry / political contacts can help, but i am unsure...
i did not want to dash his hopes, and its an area of the law i am unfamiliar with.

It's a touchy subject....on it's best day. I don't think political contacts will help him import firearms though. of our country.0 -
It is hard to get any firm data on the numbers of Model 1941 Johnson rifles sent to Chile, it could have been a few hundred or a few thousand, I have no idea. The rifle can be imported but as a C&R military surplus firearm only a licensed importer with a Type 08 FFL can handle the import. If this was a regular sporting rifle your customer could do the import himself on an approved Form 6. Most importers will want around $200+ to handle something like this and by law they must stamp their name and address on the rifle before it can be released to your customer. This is just something he should be aware of in case he thinks he will be getting a non-import, becasue this will not be the case at all. $850 for an 85% Johnson is a pretty attractive price, even with the 7mm chambering which will reduce collector interest somewhat. A small lot of these 7mm rifles were imported back in the late 1980's and were being sold for $795 by the old Federal Ordance company located here in SoCal along with large numbers of M1s and M1 carbines.

i will let you know what happens. i have asked him to send me some pics (the whole gun, the crest, the caliber markings, etc...) from his camera phone if he gets the chance.
he said that this collector has a huge display of NAZI / SS regalia and weapons. apparently there is a lot of this stuf on the market down there...
i inquired about the bayonet lug, as i want to know if it takes the US bayonet or was altered to take a CHILIEAN bayonet...
i thought the price was pretty good, but after its all said and done i think it will cost him more than its worth.

Mike, with the recoiling barrel I don't see how it would be possible to modify the rifle to accept any type of bayonet besides the standard Johnson "tent peg" bayonet. This was border line useless as a bayonet but had to be added to the rifle because the Ordnance Department insisted that it have a bayonet to even be considered for adoption as a service rifle.

Hey Mr. Mike, now that, based on your sales pitch, I did buy one of the Star 9mm semi-auto BM models, where can I buy extra mags and parts (collar, recoil springs, etc). I haven't shot it yet, but man it does have a great trigger pull. Sights are kinda primitive and I'm not sure what to do about that. Any suggestions?

we have a customer at the shop who is building a comp style STAR MODEL A SUPER and he started by removing the issue sights, and having the slide BOMAR cut to accept match grade componants...
i cannot do this on my STAR MODEL A (1922 VARIENT) because the rear sight acts as the firing pin retainer...
while my own sight set up is pretty crude, and my dads SUPER B is not a whole lot better, we continue to be impressed by the seemingly inhereant accuracy these guns have...
i am pretty sure TRIPLE K will have your magazine. my father and i both purchased replacement mags for our respective STAR pistols from them, and are happy...
JACK FIRST is a good scource of other odds and ends if you need a certain piece or part. i also keep an eye out here on GB or at gun shows for parts...
availability on parts for these guns is hit or miss.
i think a good gunsmith could alter your slide to accept whatever style of sight you require, or at least send it out to a 3rd party who does these installations.
let us know if you gun feeds / cycles hullowpoint ammo, as most of the STAR models will not.
occasionaly parts can be swapped from model to model. our SUPER A owner wanted a new recoil spring, but could not find one. we dissasembled 5 different STAR pistols and when comparing them side-by-side discovered that the SUPER B spring was identical to his guns. (but not mine, or the other 2 models)...
i am going to break down and by the STAR bible / history book. its about $100.00, but at this point i realy want one.
i am always on the lookout for a STAR thats been grooved to accept a shoulder stock, or is chambered in 7.63 MAUSER...

Thanks Mike, I will print you post and store it with my Star BM. Interesting info about your and your dad's Star not cycling much other than FMJ ammo as I usually expect milsurp semiautos to more or less be that way.
However, if you want hollowpoint rounds for a home defense or cocealed carry I am betting the "PowRBall" rounds will function as well as a FMJ.
