Limit On Handgun Purchases, Quota Per Period
I forget, someone refresh my memory. How many handguns can a person buy a month before the "multiple sale" thing applies? This is on the Federal level, not state....

I believe that any sale involving 2 or more handguns at one time is logged. This may be our State law. There is no federal quota per se. 0 -
The multiple purchase applies in whenever a person purchases more than one handgun at one time during five consecutive business days. Such transactions are reported to the BATFE using Form 3310.4.

Form #ATF F 3310.4 (98) Report of Multiple Sale or Other Disposition of Pistols and Revolvers is to be used by licensees to report all transactions in which an unlicensed person has acquired two or more pistols and/or revolvers at one time or during five consecutive business days.
Copy #1 is to be submitted to the National Tracing Center
Copy #2 is to be submitted to the official designated by the State or local authorities. In the absence of a designation the form is to be sent to the State police or State law enforcement agecy in the jurisdiction where the handgun transfer occurred.

Pardon my ignorance here, but what's the significance of filing the 3310.4? Simply put, what does it mean for a buyer--ATF visit or anything?

No necessarliy a visit but maybe a call to you depending on what you are buying which is reported on this form. If you bought 6 Tec-9's in a month period you may get a visit. If you bought 6 Heritage Rough Riders I doubt it.

Thanks guys, I forgot the requirements, I have been thinking about buying a few in the next month or so.
I have a friend who is a Colt Single Action Army Collector, he bought three or four at one time once (maybe it was five). Shortly thereafter, he saw a strange new car pull into his driveway and went out to meet the driver. A lady got out of the car and identified herself as an ATF agent. She said they had received the report of a multiple handgun purchase, and was checking on the circumstances of the sale. She told him it was standard procedure, an effort to stem "straw purchases". He told her yes, he had recently bought a few single action Colts for his collection. She said, "Oh, these aren't Colt .45 Automatics?" and he told her no, they were cowboy style single action revolvers. She said (essentially), "Oh, okay, never mind" and thanked him, got back in her car and left. This happened some 5-6 years ago.
So there is some "risk" associated with multiple handgun purchases. I'd just rather space them out, and save the ATF the price of the gasoline.

In 15 years I've filled out a bunch of those for one person and he has never been contacted by the BATF.[:)]

My guess would be it depends on the purchase. What prompted the ATF visit to my friend was the question, why is this guy buying five Colt .45 Automatics (even though they were actually Peacemakers). Like MFI said, you buy 6 Tec-9's at the same time, it will probably raise eyebrows. If you buy three different assorted handguns, that may not raise suspicion.
