Best Scope for Varmints

Hello,

Im new to the forum and just purchased from a friend a Remington 788 22-250. I will be using this on praire dogs and would like to know what would be the best scope to use for this caliber and long distances.

    I use a Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44mm on my Cooper 22-250. I like it better than the Leupold I use to have on it.

    Well I really don't have a limit. I guess im looking for one that will make it easier to hit a small target at long range. Kinda like the ones with range finders for deer, only for praire dogs. I just would like to know my best options and if I can't afford it now I will wait till I can.

    I looked up that scope and it looks pretty nice. What is it that you like better about the Nikon than the Leupold?

    I have an 8x32x44 Burris Signature scope on my Sako.
    You can't beat the warranty. It has a no-fault lifetime warranty.
    I had a Nikon, seemed like the crosshairs were a little too big for my liking.
    The only other one that I had, that I would recomend is the 36x Leupold, for long range.
    I would stay away from the cheaper scopes like Tasco & BSA.
    Just my opinion.

    Leupolds just don't fit me well. They have too much eye relief, I wasn't able to get the scope far enough ahead on the rifle so that I had an unobstructed view. I have heard others complain about the same thing while others don't have a problem. I think it is just personal preference. I think the Nikon is cheaper, plus it comes with lens covers.

    I was looking at Leupold when I came on thease. http://www.valdada.com/. The first reason I liked them is the retical in them, I love the MP8. It is easy to see, easy to range and dosent cover a small target (squirl) like mill dots will. I was kinda scard about spending $1000 on a scope, I got the 6x24x50 with 30mm tube and MP8 retical. I only own a couple of other inexpensive scopes which I hate and and cant wait to replace with more IORs. If you are interested I will get you the name of the place I bought mine from, the prices are way better then list price.

    Gtcpl2, if you really want a great scope, and dont mind spending some extra cash, then definatly buy a Swarovski, i think that they are the nicest scopes in the world. You can get what your looking for (about 6-18) for about $1700. If your a little tighter on budget, then buy a Nikon Monarch or Buckmasters, the monarchs are a little nicer, and about 100 bucks more, but i just bought a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18 for my 17hmr, and the thing is really nice for $300.

    From the 2 nikons I have, they seem to be very sharp and bright, but if you can afford them, I agree, the Swarovski and Zeiss are without compare. If you don't look thru them, no problem, but once you pick up a Zeiss, Swarovski(or Kahles), you really wonder why you bought all the crap before. No, I still haven't plunked the cash for one down, just drool a lot over them.

    Thanks very much for all your info. I have saved all the websites and will start with the info you have provided. Looking at some of those prices is a bit scarey, but I guess you get what you pay for and better to purchase one and be happy than to buy a cheaper one and wish I would have gotten the better one.
