M1
I put an M1 converted to an M1A for $500. on layaway at an local gunshop. The metal work looks great and the barrel is an NM along with the sight. comes with an 20 rds mag. But the only thing is that it need to be rebedded. Is this an good deal. Never mess with an M1 or M1A or M14 before. Any help is welcome. I have already been told that no M1 was converted by the military and my father comfirmed this. Thanks.

Thinking about getting an M1 and would like to know if there is anything I need to Know about before I buy one. Brand etc. I cant afford it but I just have to get one. I was at a gun show today talking to a dealer and I was subconciously caressing the stock as we spoke. He also had m14s for 500.

What you have is an M1 converted to accept a detachable box magazine, not to an "M1A". "M1A" is the copyrighted name used by Springfield, Inc. for their version of the M14 rifle. Once Springfield, Inc started production, there didn't seem to be much reason to convert an M1 to accept a box magazine.
As I recall, a gunsmith did a small number of these conversions about 20-30 years ago. It was a difficult job, & I believe it cost over $500 to do. I assume that your rifle is .30-06, but it could be .308. I would be surprised if your rifle was bedded, but don't think that there is any point in rebedding it, as you won't be doing any benchrest shooting with it.
These conversions are rarely seen, so there's no way to say if this is a good deal. But, just for a novel item, I think $500 is fair. We'd love to see photos.

Beretta converted many thousands of M1 rifles to accept detachable magazines during the 1950's. The U.S. military looked into converting M1 service rifles to selective fire with detachable mags but that project was set aside and work continued on the T44 rifle, which later became the M14 service rifle.

Neal and Mark, The rifle is an 308 win and has been bedded. the bedding job is really bad. I was just thinking about buying an Boyd stock for the rifle. I am looking at the laminate. what do you think?

That would be a fun project, as long as you have basic woodworking skills & lots of patience. The critical part is getting the trigger housing to just barely latch while applying pressure evenly on the stock from both the receiver & the trigger housing.

As Mark says, Beretta converted many thousands M1 rifles into the BM-59, box magazine fed and in caliber 7.62 NATO (.308)....very similar to the M14.

Well, yes and no. None were converted to M14 (or M1A) configuration, but the U.S. Navy did convert a number of M1s to 7.62 NATO caliber.0 -
I shoot Navy MKII Mod 1 match M1's every day. The Coast Guard and the Navy used both inserts(not very good) and the Navy special barrel conversions(very very very good) in M1's to shoot the NATO 7.62 round instead of the .30-06.
The CMP was,until very recently, auctioning the MkII Mod 0 rifles(those with inserts) on its auction sight. I really don't know if they have auctioned off any Navy Match rifles although I know that Scott-Duff has them fairly often for sale. And they really do shoot well. Beach0 -

A laminated wood stock in a humid environment is preferable to a hardwood stock on a match rifle as it minimizes stock warpage when the humidity is changing. In an arid environment you don't really need the expense of a laminated stock. Laminated stocks are not as good as plastic/fiberglass stocks in a humid environment but look crappy in comparison to the laminate. Beach 0 -
