handguns
My wife and I are beginning an instruction class on handguns. We want to utilize our handguns for recreation and personal safety. Can anyone give me some direction on a brand and model to consider? I am guessing a different one for my wife than the one I choose. I have been looking at a Beretta 9 mm for myself and a Beretta Cheetah for her.

My elderly neighbor has a Manchurian pistol with a large trigger guard he got in the Korean war. The large trigger guard is so you don't have to remove your gloves, he said. It shows 10041 on the automatic. He also has a P38 he got during WWII. He used to shoot it years ago and he thinks it is a 9mm. Both guns are about 50%, altho they are both in working order. He is looking for more information on the guns, and the value of them. Can anyone help? Thanks. 0 -

Your going to need to provide more info. on the pistol your considering.
There are/were the Gold/Signature Series that were discontinued in the mid-90's and there is the recent Gold series introduced a year or so ago.
The mid-90's I'd shy away from because they are no longer made, and as they are not true 1911 clones parts may be very hard to come by.
Now the recently released 1911's are another matter. However, as a "first" 1911 they are a bit pricey w/ retail running $800+/-
My suggestion is that you stay with one of the mainline mfg. and buy an entry level pistol. For example Springfield Armory has some pretty darn good 1911's for under $500 and when they are running promotions they offer their higher end "fully loaded" 1911's for $800 or less.
Not saying there is anything wrong with the present day Mitchell, but you may be better off gaining some experience with the mainstream before move off into varriant models.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0
