Selecting a semi-auto handgun
I'm totally new to semi-autos. Research has narrowed to Sig P226, Beretta 92 or CZ75DB. Recommendations? Also in caliber selection, 9mm was my original choice, but now I'm reading more about 40 cal.
Any suggestions, other options or recommendations will are appreciated by this novice.

Quite frankly any of the three pistols you have on your list are going to be fine and I think it is more a question of which one you like the best. The CZ is lower in cost but is an outstanding value for its price. The Beretta is a popular police pistol and our standard military sidearm and although I find the Model 92 rather large and poorly balanced they are fine handguns. The P226 is my personal favorite of the three and has to best fit, finish, and over all quality as well as the de-cocker which I prefer to the typical safety. Of course you will pay a premium for the P226 but I think they are worth the extra cash. 9mm should be just fine for your intended purpose and I would not go up to .40 unless you were seeking a more serious self defense pistol.

Not a bad selection in the group. Which one just 'feels' right and points naturally? Go with that one. 9 vs 40 can be debated for many pages. One point is the 9mm is available worldwide at any number of places and is the NATO standard. Are there more effective rounds, sure, but the 9 is effective as long as you keep your shot placement where it should be.
For my money the CZ offers the most bang for the buck. I am afraid this is not too concise of an answer but the choice has to be yours.

Thank you both. I've read a lot of good reviews and shooter reactions to the CZ, but I also ran into a group of owners complaining about jamming problems. Otherwise it seems like the best deal. 0 -
i also think the cz has alot of value for the money but if price is not much of a concern it would be hard to get better then the sig i've been wanting 220 for awhile now get out to your dealer and try closeing your eyes and bring the gun up to aim open your eyes and which ever one that had the sights closet in alignment would be your best choice as far as caliber as the other said its a moot point my first choice was the 9 but pretty much only because ammo was cheaper but the 40's are pretty cheap now and getting very popular best of luck 0 -
First, welcome to the GB forums.
Forget the Beretta. If you have the money, get the SIG, if not, get the CZ. For availability and cost of ammo, stick to the 9mm.
Well, you did say you wanted our recommendations. Other than which one "feels" better (you can't shoot a gun well, that doesn't feel right) that would be my recommendation. Other than get a 45. [;)] [:D]

From experience The Beretta SUCKS!!! I carried that thing while in Iraq, If I had the choice of weapon, I would recomend a Glock. Just thought I would throw that in there for you! 0 -

if you are wanting a side arm for security/protection
get you a Norinco 9mm. they are cheap and you can shoot crap
through them and they keep shootin.

Find a gun shop that has a range on the premises. Most of them let you rent guns for a small fee. Shoot every gun on your list and go with what you like the feel of.When you rent the gun make sure it is clean,I've been to a couple of these places and rented guns that didn't function worth a crap because they were so dirty. Needless to say,I didn't go back. You think these people would know better. 0 -
I own a sig p2340, glock 23 and an HK usp. My favorite is the USP hands down. NEVER ONCE JAMMED, and It's been shot, a lot.
I would go for .40 S&W.
That's my 2 cents.

Well I guess Im going to have to second the HK usp. It's an excellent firearm, next to that would be the Sig. And as far as your other two options, if your not going to spend the money you might as well get a Taurus PT99. I've had one for about 5 yrs now and it shoots about anything I put into it.
I did do some ramp work on it for better feeding of the 145gr Hydra-shocks. I would recommend the Taurus over the CZ or the Beretta. BEST OF LUCK[:)]

get either Sig or Beretta in 9mm and have fun with it - you'll shoot more and better getting used to a semi - good shooting 0 -

I'd go CZ, Sig, or Glock. I find the Sig to be a little too chunky in my & most hands though. The CZ75 with the decocker is probably the best deal around. I had a HK USP in 45 and had a couple of jams with it. Also I couldn't hit anything with it, sights were way too tall for me. That's not to say they aren't nice pistols, they just didn't do it for me.
Never cared for Beretta's. Never shot one well enough to say I had to have it.
I was a stuanch 45 guy but have been shooting my nines really well of recent. I'd have to recommend going with a nine over a 40 or 45 just for the mere fact that your ammo costs considerably less allowing you lots more practice.
For defense invest in some hollow points.

First off, why anyone would own anything other than a .45 1911 is beyond me. However, if you're dead set on the 9mm, try the Brownings. They feel very nice in the hand, better than any Sig. And again, a .40? Why?
