The book value for one in excellent condition (Standard Catalog of Firearms) is $275. Personally, I think that is low and would expect to see one like you describe sell for $325-$350. I seldom see them sell for under $300. If I were buying I'd offer $225-250 and see what happens.

In 1989, at Model 17-5 was when the transition was made to the full lug Model 17-6 listed as 1990 ... however there are some transition pieces out there ... so check the model. If you have a 17-6 w/o the full lug you have a more valuable revolver.

While there is a market for the 8 3/8 inch barreled revolvers the 6 inch seem to sell faster and generally bring as much if not more at sale. Same observation applies to other calibers with the "8+ inch" barrels.

However, with all said, if this is not a transition piece, in top condition $350 to $400 is about where they go. Add $25-45 if it still has the box, papers and toos. Of course markets are different around the country. If it turns out to be a transition piece it would not be suprising to see a premium of 25% or better, and I would recommend getting a Smith letter as that typically will boost value, especially with transition/varriant pieces.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!
