best brush gun

I hunt in northern Wisconsin and am going to hunt in some really dense brush and thickets. My shots will most likely be between 30 to 60 yards at best but I need something that will cut thru the brush with minimal deflection. Is a shotgun slug best or some rifle caliber/bullet type my best option.
I would appreciate any suggestions anyone may have.

    I know this probably is not what you are looking for but exactly why are you shooting through brush? If you are worried about bears or mountain lions, get a large bore revolver. If you are going to use it for hunting deer, or other meduim size game, a high velocity bullet is marginally better at delfecxting brush than something like a .444, .45-70, or .35. All bullets will be delfected by brush, no matter if it is a big, heavy bullet or a fast, lighweight one.

    If we're talking deer or pigs, I have a stainless marlin .44 mag that is perfect for lugging around through the brush. but, if thats bear country, the bigger the better[:D]

    I am not worried about bears or mountain lions but where we hunt, if you really want a chance at a large mature buck, you need to get into some pretty nasty terrian. A clear unobstructed shot is most likely not available. I am currently using a 30-06 and maybe that is good enough. I am just not sure what would be my best chance for a accurate shot thru relatively heavy cover.

    LIKE THE OTHERS HAVE SAID, ANY BULLET WILL BE DEFLECTED BY BRUSH. THE MORE BULLET WEIGHT THE BETTER, 12 GA. W/SLUGS OR MAYBE A .45/70 W/405 GN. OR 500 GN. BULLETS WOULD BE MY CHOICE (I'M FROM N. WIS. TOO). LAST WEEK-END I GOT 2 SHOTS AT A SMALL BUCH (1-STANDING, 1-RUNNING) WITH MY .35 REM. AND NEITHER BULLET GOT THERE, NOT BLAMEING THE GUN OR AMMO. JUST BAD LUCK FOR ME (BAD LUCK FOR HIM TOO, HE CHANGER DIRECTIONS AND RAN INTO MY SON).

    Through relatively heavy cover any bullet would be deflected enough to the point where I would'nt feel comfortable taking the shot. I think it is unethical to do this myself. The 06 is good enough. Have you tried drives, with one or two hunters positioned out in the open?

    Bill....I would never take a shot and just hope I hit the animal somewhere. I agree that it is completely unethical to just blast away and hope you hit something somewhere. That is the exact reason I am asking this question, I want to drop what I shoot at and not just wound the animal. I would never take a shot that I did not feel would be a good kill shot.

    I've hunted in Wisconsin for 40 years. I use a 7X57 full stocked Brno with 160 Gr Noslers. My scope is an old low power leupold. If I can't see a clear shot I don't shoot. I had to pass some nice bucks, but I also have gotten my share of bigs ones and never have had to trail one more than 30 yards.

    I read an article in my NAHC mag about deflaction and "brush guns". the guy set up dowels of different diameters to simulate branches and such and then shot several different calibers and shapes of bullets through them. His results shoed that the slower round nosed rounds actually deflacted slightly MORE than faster, more aerodynamic rounds. I think he was using 30-30 and .35, and .270 .30-06. The calibers might not be exactly right but I got the point.

    narj, when I use to hunt, I would use either a 44mag or .444 in brush. I had pretty good luck with those two. I admit I prefer older style weapons vs the newer scoped stuff though. Sitting in a blind or stand is way too boring for me. Good luck with your hunt and have a great Turkey Day
