Good Black Powder Rifle To Start With.

Hi all. I was wondering what is the best blackpowder rifle to start with? I like the synthetic stock on the rifles, but I am not sure what to look for. I am just starting so don't want to spend a whole lot on my first rifle. Another thing, how much does all the powder and bullets and wads come out too? I don't mean people to do all the reasearch for me, but what I am asking is, is it exBallPark Frankve to shoot black powder? Also where is a good place to buy them? Thanks.

I have heard that the synthetic sotcks make the rifles less accurate, is this true? Thanks!

    You can probably get the basic supplies needed for shooting an in-line for about $100 or so. That would include powder or pellets, some bullets and basic tools for shooting a front stuffer, like bullet puller etc.

    As to the rifle, you really have said nothing other than syn stock. So, do you want an in-line, a side lock, a flinter, or just what. I expect you can get a rifle for $150 or so from Cabela's. I personally shoot an old Santa Fe Arms Hawken and a TC Black Diamond. Take a look at Cabela's web site for some models and prices and then narrow down what you like/price range etc. Things like TC Hawkens can often be found in very good used condition for not much money at the local gunshop.

    I have a Traditions in- line i bought 6 years ago. 50 cal. this gun i very accurate, easy to clean, and very in expensive also. I got set up with the gun and everything to hunt with it for less than 130.00.

    I have a TC Hawkens 50cal. I like it and its real accrate to. You can get stater kits for 50 to 60 dollars then all you need is powder.I use Pyrodex RS powder it runs about 15.00 to 20.00 a pound.

    If open sights are what you want, Wal-Mart has a sidelock for $65 called the CVA bobcat, in a .50 cal. This would be a cheap start.
    If you need a scope, then I would suggest an inline. The price will vary from about $75 to $300 depending on your preference. In my opinion, I suggest no less than a .50 cal.
    IMHO for serious shooting, an inline cannot be beat.
    If my eyes were still good, I would chose a sidelock in maybe a flintlock, but those days are behind me.
    Then you must choose what type of bullet, powder, etc.
    However, for a starter I do not suggest a flintlock. also there are a lot of extras that are needed, so if you buy a gun in a kit, I believe you would be ahead.

    Hi and welcome to the forum!

    As mentioned above you need to decide the style, and if you intend to hunt w/ it you better look into the regulations for the area(s) you intend to hunt as some type of blackpowder rifles may not be allowed. Also most states have restrictions on the caliber.

    Once you have narrowed down to what you would like to buy then use the auction side of this board ... there are generally some very good buys out there.

    Aside from the basic rifle, another $75-100 will get you all the odds and ends you need to start out.

    i have a cva breech load break open black powder rifle
    50 cal. magnum with a BEC illuminated recticle
    3-12*44mm scope.shoots less than 1.5" groups at 100 yrds.
    and it will shoot out to just over 200 yrds. just as accurate.
    149.97 at wal-mart last year + power-belt bullets easey to load
    and clean.

    Thanks all. I may hunt with it, and would probably hunt hogs, but mainly I want it for shooting. I would like the side lock, I guess. The one where you put the cap on the nipple on the side of the rifle? Thanks for the help, I will look around.
