shotshell reloading steel / lead interchangable?
I have about a thousand federal 3" steel shot hulls and want to load them for lead shot for field hunting. Anybody know if dimensionally they are the same as factory lead shot cases and can I use them using the loading info for lead, 1 3/8oz shot; win 209 primers; 32 gr Herco WWAA12 wads that is in my book?

I have reloaded them. I have never loaded steel shot, I just buy it but from what I understand the main difference is the buffer used with steel to protect the barrel. I checked the dimensions on the hulls that I had and they where the same as the AA's and they shot fine. Hopefully someone who knows more about it than me will reply. 0 -
Well, I guess what I mean is, just because they are originally loaded for steel, is there any reason I can't reload with lead shot and corresponding components? Is the case different internally or exactly the same with STEEL stamped on the outside? 0 -

How clear does one need to be to state a question?
I am reloading LEAD shot and the components listed for that lead shot loading. I do not reload with steel. I use a reloading manual to get that recommended loading data. I just wanted to know if there were any differences in a CASE used with steel shot vs the lead shot loading.0 -
I reread my post and see that I didn't clearly state that I DID reload "steel shot" hulls with lead and they shot fine. 0 -
cgs500 thanks for the info. I haven't had anyone else able to relate that as acceptable, and I couldn't see why the manufacturer would need to make a different case for steel over lead. It made sense to me the cases would be the same. I just didn't want to chance it and blow up a bbl or worse. Have a great Thanksgiving, the best holiday since adopted in 1794. 0
