I was wondering if you buy an ak can you put on a folding stock or the ones that slide up the side. Or do you need to buy one with it on

  Depends on what kind of AK you have. The current crop of Romanian and Bugarian AK's that have a conspicuous pistol grip (non-thumbhole stock) you can switch out the stock for a folder.
  
  2 screws is all that stops you.
  
  Older Bulgarians and Mak90 AK's require a certain number of US parts to be added to legally put a stock (folding or otherwise) and pistol grip on.
  
  I have put folding stocks on both of my Romanian AKs.
