Rifle for Deer Hunting?
I have a browning BAR 300 Mag.it weights 8 lbs 3 oz. It's just to heavy! My question what would be a good Rifle to use for Deer?

A light weight bolt action should fill the bill. .243 Winchester cal. up through .30-'06 cal would be adequate. I am assuming you are talking about white tail deer. .243 would be a little light for mule deer. my .02 0 -
As you already have a good magnum rifle for long range work, I'd expect that something in a lighter smaller caliber would be in order. Depending on where you hunt, what terrain and ranges the answers can be many. Good basic recomendations would probably be the 260Rem or 6.5x55Swede and the 7mm-08 or 7x57Mauser, depending on weather you are into the new or old. All four of these cartridegs are up to all north american big game except for the largest bears and maybe deer. As far as what rifle in particular, that's dealer's preference. Sako, Winchester, Ruger, Remington, Mauser, etc etc etc....Most wood stocked full on rifles with 22" to 24" barrels weigh in at around the 7lb+ mark. Many of the plastic injected synthetic stock can make a much lighter package, but maybe too flexible. I personally don't care for them. Remember the classic Win M70 feather weight weighs in at around 7lbs. I'd check out the auctions at the auction part of this site and ask owners of prospective rifle just what they really weigh, scopeless, and go from there. Have fun..... 0 -
hey shooter1 i had a remington model 7 in 7mm-08 and i think thats kinda the rifle your looking for it had a rather short barrel it was either 18 or 20 inchs very light i'm looking in the 2003 catalog and in the non magnum calibers its listed as 6 1/2lbs with a 20" barrel i had mine when they first came out and i'm almost positive it had a 18" barrel but i maybe mistaken as they only list a 20" barrel for nonmag and 22 for mags but anyway it was a great rifle for long journey's well balanced light very accurate all in all a great choice in my opinion for what your looking for both in rifle and caliber i'm sorry i no longer have it and i'm trying to get it back hope this helps as thats the only experence i have with what i would consider a mountain rifle 0 -
My Ruger M77 MKII .308 has been a super performer on Whitetails. I am also a big fan of the .270 Win.
Having said that I also love my 94 Win. in .30-30. It is super light and handy, and if I do my job with shot placement, the .30-30 always does its job.

After years of hunting and carrying heavy rifles i decided to buy a used 600 Remington Mohawk in .308.
Light at 6 lbs. it is also fast handling and hard hitting.
It can shoot a 3 shot .75 inch group using factory ammo.
I equipped mine with a 2x7 Leupold VX-1 scope and a nice sling pushing it to a total weight when loaded at a very modest weight of just under 7 1/4 lbs.
I have since bought these rifles in .243 and 6mm.
Great rifles one and all.
As far as the model seven Remington is concerned it too is a lightweight very well made rifle but dont expect it to shoot groups like the older Mohawk because it wont because it wont with it's pencil thin barrel.
My 7-08 model 7 on a good day would only shoot about a 3 inch group.
Still it's very adaquate to kill deer with though.
If the short carbines are not what you are looking for then there are many other 22 inch barrel lightweight rifles out there to chose from.

As our rifles get old, they get heavier, Replaced my 30-06 Huskie with a Browning Hoop leaver 308 with a 6 power scope, first 2 shots will go in to the same hole at 100 yards, then the barrel band takes over. I dont care ifn I cant hit a deer with the first 2 shot's the 3rd one aint going to help. It's light short and a JOY. 0 -
I would suggest a Tikka T3 lite in a 25-06 or .270 with a sims limbsaver recoil pad (model# 10112). The T3 lite is 6.5 pounds and the recoil pad will remove any excess recoil from the light weight stock. The accuracy is less then a 1" moa. GREAT rifle with a silky smooth trigger that can be easily adjusted between 2-4 pounds. I use a Sako TRG-S Warbird and it about 2 pounds more so I am debating going down to a T3 in a .270 WSM. It's amazing how I can argue with me, myself and I[;)].

Watch out for the Tikka T# until they have found out FOR SURE what caused the barrel problems and double checked to see if the SN is one that has been recalled!! 0
