hi, i just bought a ruger 77/17hmr. its awsome, but if i would ever want to get a 22lr barrel for it would it work and fit? ive seen some really nice ones. if not, would the 22 magnum barrel fit on it?

Haven't tried it myself, sir martin, but I believe that the .22 mag conversion would work.

The answer to your question is no. If you want to convert to a .22 it must be the .22 Magnum.
There are subtle differences between the 77/17HMR and the 77/22LR rifles. The .22LR and .22 Magnum are on different gun platforms due to the increased length and chamber pressure of the .22 Magnum. A .22LR barrel can only be matched to a 77/22LR and the 77/17HMR can only be matched to the 77/22 Magnum. The same is true for the 10/22 Magnum and the 10/17HMR or the 10/22LR and 10/17M2. There are some complications for converting the 10/22LR to the 10/17M2 that I will not go into here, but it is possible.
Below is one of my conversions from a 10/22 Magnum to a .17HMR. This was before Ruger made a 10/17HMR. The barrel is a Jarvis match grade barrel mated to the 10/22 Magnum receiver. The barrel is factory contour barrel(not a the 0.920 bull barrel) so it is a drop- in fit to the factory stock. The barrel is guaranteed for 0.25 inches at 50 yards. This is really a fun gun since it has some tricks.
