Marlin .444

I was looking for information from anyone on their opinion of the Marlin .444 (not the guide series) and what kind of accuracy they have achieved at 100 yards. Most of my use would be for whitetails in thick brush. I currenlty use this caliber in a Thompson Centender 14 inch barrel with good results.

    I'm interested in this caliber and have been researching it. I understand it uses a .429 bullet, same as a .44 Remington Mag and that it was brought out before the resurgence of the Govt 45/70.
    What I have been unable to find out is the following.
    Since the .444 Marlin is essentially a .44 Rem Mag that has been stretched out, does that mean that a .44 Rem Mag can be fired through the chamber, like a .44 Special can through a .44 Mag or a .38 Spl through a .357 Mag ?

    Also, I have read considerable conflicting information regarding the micro groove barrel and the accuracy of cast bullets. I haven't found any bullets in .429 that specifically state they are designed for the .444 Marlin and would like to use hard cast bullets so the micro groove barrel becomes an issue when selecting a firearm for this caliber.

    Well my fathers 30+ year old one could easily group under 1/2 inch at 100 yards and back when he was shooting well he said he could put 2 or 3 threw the same hole with it.

    Of course they don't make them quite as well anymore the new models are half synthetic etc.

    I have the winchester 94 in the 444cal and can place 4 shots in a 3in circle at 100yds. I wouldn't be afraid to take 150yd shot after that bullet drops very fast. I reload and use the hornady 265gr bullet which seem too have better weight retention fot the speed of the 444, verses some of the other pistol bullets.

    I had a Marlin 444,Bought it new the first year they came out. It had a 24in barrel and straight grip stock. Great knock down power,and with that micro groove rifleing it was very accurate. I dressed it up a little with hand made sights made out of solid brass, extended the magizine tube full length, made brass barrel bands front and rear, then I made a big mistake, I intrusted a man (Robert Clark)to install a cresent shaped butt plate on it. I haven't seen him or my 444 since. I sure would love to have it back.[:(]

    I have used my marlin mod. 336 in 444 cal. on wild pigs, at 150 yards or less it is very straight shooting. On whitetail though it seems like it might be a bit too much gun. On thing for sure, it is not the kind of gun you can spend a afternoon at the range with if you intend to shoot a lot. After 10 or 12 rounds you will really feel it.
