308 surplus ammo
Surplus 308 ammo can be purchased quite inexpensively, is anyone having problems with it though????

I have a Bushmaster 308 A3 20'. I've been useing match 168g. ammo for it. But now I'm looking at stocking up on some good yet cheeper ammo for it. I've read a lot of words on:
Australian ADI (Australian Defense Industries)/Aussie, but is the 70's and 80's just as good as the newer 90's ammo,...? the older stuff comes in an ammo can, striper clips and Canvas Bandoliers. While the newer comes in plastic (bubble) wrap. Also looking at the:
Portuguese Battle packs.
Any Info would be appreciated.

I haven't sen any from the 70's, but I have been working on a case of MF 84 which will shoot .87" 10 shot groups out of my mauser, it just came in boxes inside cans. The AFF 88, came on clips and bando's inside cans, it is almost as good, does less than 2" in my FAL. 92 and newer is boxer primer and reloadable.

I've bought both from ammotogo off gunbroker and the portugese shoots nice and burns clean, but it leaves brass shavings in my chamber, the australian I bought came in bandoliers on stripper clips and it burns just as clean but no bits of brass. So there you have it, haven't had any misfires or anything like that. 0 -

The Portuguese make good ammo.
There was some Portuguese 8mm surplus out there a year ago that was the best of the best.0 -

I have used the British surplus NATO ammo from Radway Green which is really good stuff with Berdan primer and is noncorrosive. The supply of this stuff is mostly gone but it was good.
I have also shot the Royal Ordinance ammo made in India in 1986. This is a brass case with boxer primer so these are reloadable. The powder leaves your rifle a little dirty but the performance has been surprisingly good.
Check with the below website. They have the best prices I have seen so far on the Indian ammo ($59.95/500) with discounts on larger purchases.

If I were you, I might look into the Indian before making a purchase. I've heard horror stories of hangfires, misfires and other crap like that. I haven't shot it because of the stories, so I personally wouldnt know however. 0 -
I'd stay away from the Indian ammo.
Used 150 rounds to break in the barrel on my 308 and it was shooting ALL over the place. I am talking about 12 inch groups at 100. Could just be my rifle not liking that ammo but it shot my buddy's surplus ammo fine. (3MOA or so) Federal Gold, I was under 1/2MOA. So if you are use to shooting match grade stuff. Don't expect too much from the surplus.0 -
I was told by a guy from down under that it meant "Mulwex Factory", as that is the only ammo manufacturer down there. They make some of Hodgdons better Powders such as Varget. AFF I was told meant Australian Foreign Forces, or something to that effect.

Port, Aussie, and south african are all good ammo. The SA has dried up but you can still get port for $159/1000 at aim surplus. The indian stuff is hit or miss, but most seem to miss and quite a few lots have been dangerously out of spec. You buy this stuff through the mail you're playing russian roulette with the indian stuff. 0
