glock 27 shooting 9mm

I can't seem to find any information on this but I know I've read it before.

Is it possible to purchase a glock 27 but then use a glock 26 barrel to shoot 9mm? If that's possible, is there anything else that would need to be changed internally or is it just a simple swap of barrels and magazines?

I've been pondering the thought of getting the 27 and practicing with the 9mm rounds. Obviously I'd also practice with .40cal rounds for proficiency.

Anyone out there do this? Would anyone recommend against it?

    I've got a Glock 27 and my wife has a Glock 26.

    1. I field stripped both of them and the 26 barrel does fit in the 27 slide. I don't know if it would shoot ok though.
    2. In looking at the magazines, the lips at the top of the 27 mag is wider than the lips on the 26 mag. I don't think the magazines are interchangeable.

    An aftermarket barrel will cost you at least $100.00. Then there's the magazine expense. In my opinion, you'd be better off spending the money on some good hardball practice ammo in .40 cal.

    Why were you 'pondering' that in the first place?

    you could get one of those .22 slides if you wanted to practice for cheap.

    It shouldn't be possible to shoot 9mm through a .40 glock. The breechface is way too big on the .40. If you can manage to ge a 9mm to go bang in a .40 breechface, it will probably not function and might cause a casehead seperation and/or case failure (read "explode in your face"). If you have never experienced this, it is not a good thing and usually sends little chuncks of hot powder and metal spraying all over you and could possibly (gasp) damage an "indestructable" gun like a glock. It is probably possible to swap the slide back and forth along with the magazines...see your local tupperware dealer for details. Ha. In case you are wondering, the old .41 AE used a 9mm case head with a .41 caliber body, so a simple(?) mag change and barrel change would change calibers.....yea, that worked out well. If you get the caliber change to work, let me know. My glock armorer friends would love to hear about it.

    I put a Glock 19 9mm barrel and mag in my .40 Glock 23. Functioned just fine. Zero problems with extraction or anything else. Glocks are designed as combat weapons with loose tolerances. One millimeter difference on the breachface didn't seem to matter. One of the gunwriters in one of the mainstream rags did the same thing about 4 or 5 years ago. When it worked for him, I gave it a try. The only thing that wouldn't work was putting .40 rounds in the 9mm mag. The feed lip area is too small.

    Amazing, I stand corrected. Leave it to glock to create such a loosely built gun that it will even function while screwed up. Any recoil spring changes required? Seems like the 9 spring would be a little light with a hot 40 load. Of course, I didn't think it would work to begin with.

    Use the 9mm barrel and 9mm mags and it should be safe. Breechface is wide, and extractor and ejector are spaced slightly too wide, which could lead to erratic ejection or possible jams, but then again, at least one other person on here has done it without any problems.

    For what it's worth, I know that you can throw a G22 upper (40) onto a G17 (9) lower. Change your mags & you have two guns for the price of, well, two guns.

    Interesting thoughts which illustrate the resons behind the popularity of Glock pistols. The answers are mostly to an extent yes. A company called "KKM" makes excellent match grade barrels for all Glocks. Among their offerings you will find barrels made specifically to shoot 9mm. out of 40S&W setups like the models 23 and 22. I have sold many of such barrels which work just fine, and are backed in performance by the manufacturer. The difference in breechface and "extractor" geometry would be the curious aspect that would give problems, but seem to work fine. If you disassemble for comparison a model 19 (9mm.) and a model 23 (40 S&W) you will notice that the only difference is the slight positioning difference in the ejector, which could interfere with the "feeding" of the ammo. The clearance groove pathway in the slides of both models clears both ejectors well though. An "old trick" that some people used during the high cap ban era was to use a 10 round magazine made for 40 S&W, but load it with 9mm. instead, and it would yield the correct high capacity fill of the pre-ban high cap. 9mm. mag., and it would hold the ammo in place and feed it fine. In fact as we speak, I just filled and old ten round mag. marked .40 S&W meant for a Glock 23 with fifteen rounds of 9mm. and while the top bullet sits a little bit higher, this will actually make it feed better. How about that? Hail the mighty Glock! and this comes to you from a confirmed 1911 gunsmith and slave. Have fun, but be safe!

    One thing I know for sure is, this kind of tinkering is best left to experts that can cover all the bases. My advice is buy both firearms or choose one. You are dealing with enough power to blow your hand/head clean off.
