    CM is right, are you thinking of plinking or small game. General purpose? How much are you willing to spend?? What features would you like to have ?? Think it thru and repost and chances are you'll get more answers than you bargined for .

    Depends what you want it for. If you're talking high level smallbore competition, Anschutz makes some nice ones for around $2000-3000.

    If you're talking about just screwing around and plinking, it's hard to beat a Ruger 10/22. You can pick them up used for around $110-140 without too much trouble.

    My own experience:
    *1 = Ruger 10/22 very accurate, always works, look for the full
    stock version from the late90's
    * 2 = Marlin 39 great guns and good value in used very
    accurate
    * 3 = Winchester 69 bolt action pay more for a grooved recieve
    these are usually as accurate as a Kimber but can be
    had $250-300

    If you want good value for the money look at the CZ 452s in any of the various configurations. If you want cheap, go 10/22 or better yet, one of the many Marlin models. However, as already noted, to properrly answer this question, it depends on what type of shooting you want to do.

    I have 6 or 8 22s - 10/22, Marlin 80, couple of rolling blocks, Stevens Favorite, M44US, but the one that is most fun is a Rossi pump (Win 90/06 clone - I have an 06 but don't shoot it). I can pop shotgun shells at 30-40 yds with it all day, shooting from a lowered shoulder point shooting position. If I had to give them all up save one, I think it would be the keeper.
