Opinions on the Mossberg 500 Persuader?
I am considering purchasing a Mossberg 8 shot 500 Persuader. I will be using this shotgun for casual clay pigeon shooting, rabbits, and possibly an upcoming boar hunt (with slugs.) It will possibly also be a home defense gun. I'm just looking for opinions on this firearm in regards to reliability, ruggedness, and overall performance and function. Reliable, yes. Rugged, sure. Home defense, yup. Hunting, nah.
It's a fair shotgun. But I probably wouldn't bother trying to hunt with it.

They're functional, utilitarian guns, but if you do get one, check your states hunting regulations before you take it out. Some states require shotguns to be plugged to 2 rds in the magazine, regardless of what you hunt, others require it only for birds.

It will be fine for your intended purposes, except that in the case of hunting with shot, you will need to limit your shots to 25-30 yards. The gun has a cylinder bore, as such will throw patterns which make it hard to miss at that range, but will have holes beyond that. The gun is reliable, rugged, and nearly idiot proof. you may need a long dowel for a magzine plug depending on your states hunting regulations.

One other thought is a standard 500. I have one I got 10 years ago and it has been used. The only problem I ever had with it was some reloads I did that didnt get sized right. I recomend this because they usualy sell them in a combo pack. They come with a standard 18.5" bbl and a ribed 28" bbl. Switching takes less then a min. I think you can still get this set up for less then $250. The standard 500 only holds a total of 6rds though.
