How common is the Danish 8mm Krag??
I was wondering how common or widespread the Danish Krag-Jorgensen rifle is in the US.
This rifle is the one I inherited from my father.
He worked at the danish munitions-factory, a military workshop - they can also blue guns the old way - just like the original Krags were treated.
The entire rifle have all-out numbers matching.
The bayonet is older and have a lower number than the rifle. (I just bought it to complete the set)
What would a thing like this go for in the US?
I am just curious, as not even Bill Gates could make an offer big evough to be able to buy this one.
It's a shooter, barrel is clean, no pits or anything.
Barrel reblued.
I have 280cartridges for it - in 12.7grams bullets.
The caliber is : 8*58R, sometimes marked 8*5RD.
Some from the 40's and some from mid 60's.
Now I won't use those cartridges, as theyre still in original boxes.
The one box with the brass-sheet wrapped around the shells - is pretty rare here.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.
The only way to get stoned??? - Whisky on the rocks.!!

I don't recall ever seeing any 8mmKrag ammo, but if I remember correctly (it's early, and I haven't had any coffee) you can use the Americian Krag brass by simply expanding the neck to 8mm.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

A very nice looking Krag! As Mark has already said these rifles are a little uncommon, but, not rare in this country. I think $400-$600 would be a ballpark figure. The Danish rifle that will bring the most money here in the States is the Rolling Block either in caliber 11.7X51R or in 8X58R.
I would like to correct one thing: You can not make cartridges for the 8X58R from U.S. 30-40 Krag brass. The Danish case is larger in all dimensions except the length of the case.
I have two questions of my own:
1.) Is your rifle sighted in for the round nose bullet or for the spitzer?
2.) What is the purpose of the brass around the packet of cartridges?
Are they striper clips or to protect the box when it is in the cartridge pouch?

Bertram Brass makes this case as do a few others in this country, but it is always quite pricey. I don't have my copy of Cartridges of the World with me so I cannot check dimenisons, but this case looks alot like the 8x56R Hungarian. I don't know if the brass is cheap enough to warrant trying the conversion, and I would postulate it is NOT! There is no way I can think of to make this a cheaper shooting proposition for you as the military surplus ammo is usually good and the cheapest source available.
Are those lead bullets? If so, that is likely a good thing as rifle barrels that old normally don't fare too well with jacketed rounds. There are a lot of nice looking 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifles in this country that look great on the outside and because someone used modern, albeit low pressure, jacketed rounds through it, have lost most if not all of the rifling. If your gun was produced after WWI then I would consider it less of a concern, but still worth noting. Very nice looking rifle, by the way! Glad to see you are keeping it in the family! I find it interesting that the American and Danish Krags look SOOO different! The barrel jacket, the shorter, thicker bolt handle, the rear cocking piece...all markedly different. Too many of our Krags were sporterized over the years, and the existing pool of really good Krags is drying up fast over here! Congratulations and have fun with that old smoke pole!!

I think I saw some ammo recently for the Krag - at a homepage in the US.
I was using the search-string "+obsolete +black +powder", I didn't search for the Krag - but it was on one of those sites that I found it. So you have some companies who sell it.
Here, reloaders can buy new brass from the sweedish Norma factory.
Norma also makes a pallet or two every now and then - that ammo dissapears from that pallet almost before it ends up at the distributor.
People go crazy when a new shipment of ammo comes in for their Krag rifles.
Then it's shootingtime again.
I've found a company here in Denmark, that buys the old brass and gets some new from the Norma factory.
So they load it up with the original specs - but with a Norma Oryx or Alaska bullet on it - in 12,7grams.
I have no idea wether the rifle is sighted in with the FMJ-type or the soft point stuff.
All the ammo I have is original ammo, original specs and 12.7gram bullet.
At the short distances I'm likely to use it - I don't forsee any big notisable change. =o)
I just found a Krag Collectors forum. They seem totally Bonkers whenever an original Danish Krag in 8mm comes up. [:)]
