M1 Garand with VAR bbl
Guys,
I have a Garand built on an "A" grade CMP receiver (806,xxx) with an 11-59 VAR bbl installed/headspaced by Tony Pucci who wrote on his invoice it was "as-new" with zero wear (and minimum SAAMI headspace). It has a unitized front handguard/lower band assembly, new 65- bolt, as-new gas cylinder and BMB op rod, CMP GI wood in very good shape (walnut stock/front guard, nice tiger striped birch rear), and was the rifle I was going to use for matches, but it isn't happening, so I am considering posting it for ~$750. Does that sound ball-parky? I don't want to overprice it, but am not sure I would take much less for it. I test fired it with GI LC 72 & TW 55 & it grouped around 2" or so and would surely do better with some good handloads. I have the eternal dilemma of wanting to keep it but also would like to acquire an AR to replace my pre-ban M4 I sold in a particularly bad streak of misjudgment.
Any comments would be appreciated (I already know I am a boob for selling the M4 [;)]).

That seems like a fair price. Accurized M1's are often difficult to sell without taking a loss, but Tony is well known for quality work. Still, it's just going to be a matter of finding the right buyer.

If you're not holding MOA, there's probably something wrong.
Could be the shooter, could be the bedding...the VAR
barrels are superb, and Tony is reliable. How is your
ammo? Sight picture over-concentration? Too close to the
aperture? Do you have trouble with other rifles
with iron sights?0 -
"If you're not hold MOA, there's something wrong."... 2" groups with issue ball ammo is all you can ask of any rifle. Match ammo or good reloads will better this. 0 -

Why would you sell an obvious gem like your garand for the cash to buy a an AR, any AR?
As you may have figured out I am not a fan of the Stoner weapons system. The only thing going for them is they are exceptional accurate.
Take them out of the "Clean Room" enviroment and into the real world and one of these plastic boat oars will get you killed!
Why do you think the military is re-issuing M-14's? It's because the M-4's don't work in sand!
I've talked to several grunts and jar heads who've returned from Iraq and, to a man, they all "aquirred" a real back up gun.

I wouldn't sell the garand period! I certainly wouldn't buy any M-4. If you need a 223 auto rifle buy the new Ruger it's a way better gun! This is of course my HMO.[8D]
