$1k vs. $300 AK-47, what's the difference?
What's the difference between the $500-1200 Ak-47s and the cheaper $270-400 Ak-47s for sale?
At first I thought it was single stack vs. double stack, but there are cheap guns that accept double-stack mags too.
How big a deal is it to have a milled receiver?
I'm looking for a cheap Ak-47 that accepts double-stack mags, has a pistol grip fixed stock (prefer wood), and that's reliable. Suggestions?

Milled receivers are fine ,but the original ak design was stamped ,and they are just fine0 -
Same advice - stick in the lower range. I have both milled and stamped, and both function fine. Accuracy was never a goal for these guns, and some just happen to shoot better than others. When you get one, and take it apart for cleaning you will shake your head and smile. Wonderfully simple, easy fit slack parts, and bangs ever time.
The Norinco clones were very popular, the fit and finish was generally uniform from gun to gun. We have an AK (from Romania I think) that is ugly as can be, metal was painted with runny black paint, wood has plugs and patches, sounds like a bucket of bolts when you cycle the action, but it has never failed to shoot, and groups about 3" at 75yds. Some folks look for chrome lined barrels, in SKS's and AK's, but with non-corrosive ammo it is not a big deal.

...or you can get a heavy barrel RPK variant (VEPR) from Robinson Arms. Excellent fit/finish. $450-$800 depending on the options you want them to add. If you just want a cheap plinker, get a SAR-1. You get what you pay for. 0 -

What's the difference? Usually one word, Craftsmanship. Buy an AR-15 isn't bad advice. Of course the preban ones (pre 89) will command a higher price. 0 -
We can hope that a 1K AK will have something going for it over and above a $300 AK. Those things might be Collectability and or Craftsmanship.
To me, it is still very early in the game to accurately speculate wheter or not the bans sunset will significantly affect the prices of the collectable pre 1989 rifles. My suspicion is the Polytech Legends and such will be affected by the fact that now, people can buy very similar rifles for half the money. they wont be the real deal, so to speak, but there had to be at least a few people buying the preban guns because they had to have the evil cosmetic goodies that goes along with them.
Truth is, I have a Polytech Legend, and while such rifles are reviled for being the most authentic AK47s avaivable, their actual workmanship is far below US standards.
But most of the lowest priced AKs you see now are still the post ban models with none of the real evil assault rifle features. And to take a politically sanitized AK with things like no bayonet lug, no folding stock, no pistol grip, no bayonet lug, and then add all those features will cost some bucks.
Which is why the most recently produced verions with all those goodies is costing quite a bit more then the $300 level. Dealers are still trying to get rid of their old post ban inventory.
Myself, if I wasnt building a few out of 80% receivers and kits right now, I would go with the Vepr, just because of the quality and potential for collectors status they have.

Us poor slobs buy the $300 Romanians and change them to our liking.
I have close to $900 invested in my SAR1, sent it the above guys to refinish, thread the barrel, and perform a trigger job then I continually modify it.
