And, you might want to open the cylinder & see what's stamped on the yoke (the side of the frame that shows only when the cylinder is open).

My first thought would be Mdl 10 or a model such as 1905 which they used before the Mdl. 10 designation. My only ref. book is still packed away. I am sure there will be an answer to your question soon from some one more knowledgable than me on S&W's.
What are other markings? Such as on the top of the barrel, patent dates. Are the adj. sights the same as current ones?0 -
Pre-Model 14/15, mfg. 1948, 5 screw (front of trigger guard pointing toward revolvers grip is #5)
You could have the K-38 Combat Masterpiece or the Target Masterpiece
If front sight is a Patridge then it's a target, if ramped it is a combat.
Grips should be walnut in the double diamond pattern.
Top condition value is $300-350+, box w/ papers and tools can add $50 or more.

It has 4 screws 3 on the side +1 on the trigger gaurd

Didn't become 4 screw until 1955 when the upper side plate screw was deleted. If the serial number range you've give is "K" followed by 5 digits starting with what you've shown then the production year was, as previously stated, 1948. If there are 6 digits following the "K" and the starting digits are what you've indicated then it is 1954 or 1955 and that would make sense if there is no upper side plate screw.
However if there is an upper side plate screw, then if the revolver has the original or original style Magna grips on it there is a screw under the right grip panel that would make your 5th screw.
If the front sight is not ramped then, if it is original, it has a patridge sight and that would make it a Masterpiece Target which was the pre-Model 14.
Also, now that I've re-read your post you mention 5 inch barrel. I totally "slept through" that point the first time around. The Target Masterpiece had a 6 inch barrel and the Combat had a 4 inch barrel. In 1957 the Illinois State Police ordered the Combat w/ 5 inch barrels, those are the first "Masterpiece" revolvers produced with that barrel length. Did you measure the barrel from the cylinder face to the muzzle tip?
I hope this is helping you, but the problem w/ these posts is the partial descriptions ... this isn't a shop you walk into and guns can be physically examined ... we only know what we are told, and pictures go a very long way in helping, so help us to help you by giving the best descriptive info. possible in the future ... please.

Not that is matters but this is my 5 screw.
one more under the grip and one in the trigger guard.
