Leupold Mounting

Does anyone use loctite on the windage screws on Leupold Bases? I have a mount that keeps coming loose, but I was told not to use Loctite on those screws. Can anyone help? Thanks

    I have never had them come loose. What caliber rifle is it? If they are tightened securely, they should not loosen up. I am not really a big fan of the Leupold standard bases, I prefer the Dual Dovetail mounts instead, they will never loosen up!

    It's a BAR in 300 Win Mag. I have never had them come loosen either, but this is the second time they have loosened up on this rifle. I was considering getting the guy Dual Dovetail rings instead.

    Yes, you can Loc-Tite (blue only) the screws on the scope base - just don't use it on the ring screws. Heavy recoiling rifles sometimes loosen the base screws of any mount. To remove, a bit of localized heat will assist in loosening them up.

    Better yet, get a system where both bases and rings share the load, such as the weaver system. Warne makes excellant mounts and bases, and are the best value out there.

    The rear adjustment screw setup is dinosaur, it ads no benefit. Nearly all scopes now have ample windage adjustmet. Spend the nominal $ and upgrade to a better system.

    Strip (gunscrubber) all base screws and then loctite. Also strip the hole with a little gunscruber and pipecleaner.

    My case may be an exception, but I have never had these screws loosen.
    Have had the scope slide in the rings however, but that's probably because of the tendency to be careful to not over-tighten the screws and squash the scope.

    Since the tension is only on the top of the under side of the screw head, the screw tends to bind in the hole and pretty well locks itself. If they loosen it means you haven't torqued it tight enough.

    Some of us dinosaurs remember when Redfield first came out with this base, the left side screw thread was deliberately very tight.
    Once set, you only took out the right one to remove the scope.

    Shute, since this rifle has come back twice for the same problem, I made sure the last time that the screws were tight. I could not budge them when he left the shop. Dave, I wish I could talk the guy into weaver bases. He is set on Leupolds, someone told him they are the best. I prefer weaver.

    go with the blue locktite, will not hurt anything, just use a little heat to remove.
