1909 Argentine mauser

Found one Wizardized (I like that word) at my local pawn shop. The original barrel had been stamped 30-06 but you can't close the bolt completely on a round. The action is tight and not pitted, good floor plate. Sound exactly like Charley's boss's gun.

Is it worth $100 for the action to rebarrel to the previously discussed .243?

    I'm not much of a fan of sporterizing, but on a gun already done up as such, I'd say yes, in that the 09 Argie action and so forth is probably one of the most desireable.

    The action will work for what you want. If it is worth $100 is up to you. If you are going to build a custom .243 on this action you are going to have $400-$500 tied up in it even if you do the work yourself. It may be cheaper just to buy a .243 and be done with it. After all is said and done it's your call.

    I have a 1909 Mauser - It shoots a 7.65mm cartridge. The only maker is Norma. Close to a 30-06 but not exactly, I wonder if this cartridge would fit your action?

    The 1909 is the right length action for a 30-06. A 243 in the box mag will be prone to slam back and forth with each shot from the recoil. This isn't a big deal as the 243 doesn't kick that much, still I prefer to build .308 cased cartridges on the "intermediate" length M98 actions. I'd be looking for models like the 1903 Turk, the '48 Yugo or the '24 FN for the basic of a custom M98.

    Wrong. Hornady also makes it at a very reasonable price, for hunting ammo that is. I have also seen some stuff from an unknown manufacturer in plain white boxes, unstamped heads, but boxer primed. Odd. In any event, good point, the 7.65 itslef is a great round, as is the 06, both of which would be fine as well for your project. quote:Originally posted by jlight

    I don't think so. Hornady makes 7.57 but it is not the same thing. However, if you could please post a link to another 7.65mm maker it would save me a lot of money. A box of the Norma 7.65 arg. goes for about $45.00.
