winchester model 70
I just purchased a used winchester model 70 xtr sporter magnum in 7mm remington magnum and on the opposite side of these markings on the barrel is the word featherweight,the barrel is 24"long and is clean {no open sights]non of my other xtr sporters have this.The markings are crisp and bright and match the other rifles.any ideas?

I purchased a winchester model 70 with a Lyman Alaskan 2.5 power scope for $100.00 from a former "Tuskeegee Airman" whom I will not name. Upon tracing the serial number through a friend we discovered that it was made in 1947.According to him,"I shot a moose with it in 1955 and it's been in the closet ever since".The rifle has been appraised. Would obtaining a letter or bill of sale with his signature on it increase the value of the rifle? 0 -
I'll assume the "9" after the "?" isn't supposed to be there and say 1964.
As far as a "deal" goes,I'd say ya didn't do bad.

I'm gonna disagree with you just a little Bobby..I think you'll find it was made in 1963- Last year production of the old model.
The 1964 Model 70's started production with serial # 700,000. In the condition you describe, I think you got a real good deal!!

You may be right,however,according to the Blue Book,1963 ended with #581471,so,since Todd's is 58592?,what gives?

Hello all! The "Blue Book" uses George Maddis' First Edition, of "Dates of Manufacture". When Mr. Maddis was gathering info on this 1978-1980, Winchester gave him "Sales Records, and some manufacturing records". Therefore, some Model Winchesters just aren't accurate. When Maddis did his "2nd" edition USRA, gave him "Manufacturing Records" so there is quite a difference. Also one has to bare in mind the date the receiver was made, (serialised once the machining was complete) is not the date the gun was assembled, proofed and sent to the warehouse. I believe that the serial number given will fall into the "Pre-64" range, and a $325 investment is a GOOD deal. Regards Dave 0 -
