Caliber Choices???

I am about to purchase a new rifle. One thing I'm sure of, it will be a T/C Encore. Not so sure which caliber I want. I own a 7-Mag Browning A-Bolt... LOVE IT, but want something smaller. I think I've narrowed down to a 25-06 or 7mm-08. Anyone who's shot both? Recoil? Groups? Range? Are they really that different? Any opinions will be helpful. Will be using the rifle to deer hunt with in Arkansas. Really only concerned with this gun for ranges out to 150-200 yards (I've got the 7-Mag for anything past that). Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum! Lots of good folks with great information here!

    Given your parameters, I would go with the 7mm-08 simply because it will handle deer out to your limit and beyond, the recoil is quite tolerable and there is an ever increasing number of good bullets available. Besides, you already shoot a 7mm, why not minimize the fuss and just shoot another fine cartridge with the same bullets? The 7mm-08 will definitely perform up to and surpass your needs.

    Hi, and welcome to the forum!

    You make no mention of what you would like to use the Encore setup for.

    You already have more than enough 7mm to handle anything in that class of bullet. However, unless you reload, that round is pretty darn expensive.

    All of the calibers mentioned are good and they can certainly provide highly accurate performance at the distance you've mentioned.

    For general (utility) use the 308 suggested is the better choice. Wide choice of ammo and plenty of Milsurp. around for plinking or punching holes in paper.

    A 7/08 would bre the best choice of the two you speak of, because of,
    less recoil, more range, more bullet weight's, and inherently more accurate.

    I'm gonna have to say 25-06...been shooting one for 30 years and have taken deer, pronghorn, elk, hogs, coyotes, and other vermin with it. Flat shooting, and I do mean FLAT, minimal recoil, and is good on deer way out past 200 yds!!! Easy to reload, lots of bullet selection from 75 grains on the low end to 120 on the high end.

    I live in Louisiana and have hunted all over Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma with it. And it's sort of like this...if I can see it, I can shoot it. Of course, unless your on a bean field or a power line, most shots on deer here are under 75 yds.

    Haven't shot a 7mm-08, but then, haven't had a reason to.

    Hi there, Sounds like you need a .308 win. Perfect round for anything less than 500yds and can be hand loaded for up to 1000yds. Good luck with your choice and BE SAFE[:)]

    If you decide to go with the 25-06 be sure that you can get a 24" barrel. If you aren't going to have enough barrel you might as well go 257Roberts or 6.5x55swede as the 25-06 is a flat shooting cartridge if it has enough barrel to justify the powder.
