300 weatherby load problem

I was given 50 rounds of 300 weatherby ammo. It is reloads, and WBY brass, fed 215, 180 balistic tips, but is loaded with 90.5 grains of H1000. All of my references show 85.5-88.5 grains as max. Does anyone have a reference that show this load as a safely tested load? I hate to tear them down if I don't have to, but have a gut feeling that I should.

    Under most normal circumstances, unknown reloads should be torn down. It isn't worth even bothering with them for safety reasons. However...

    The Hodgdon #26 Manual shows the maximum load of H-1000 in combination with a 180 gr. bullet to be 91.0 grains. Pressure is shown as 52,000 C.U.P. @ 3152 FPS. This load does NOT specify OAL or a specific bullet so even it's questionable since an increase in seating depth from a longer bullet can result in elevated pressure.

    Personally, I would take them apart and not even bother to worry about it. Safety first.

    what he said[:D] remember,.if they were loaded for a weatherby long throated chamber with freebore,..and you fire them in a non-freebored chamber,..pressures will be excessive.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    They are for my mark V WBY, lots of freebore. Funny my latest Hodgdon data shows 88.5 grains max at 3151FPS.

    I'll get my puller out.

    [8D]My Wby manuals don't go that high for 180 gr fmj-The MK 5/action will probably take it-but you might not!!!If they were given to you, you have to doubt the loads-I would pull all the bullets-just neck size and refill with some sane powder amounts.[^][^][:D]

    As above. The first magnum rifle I owned was a 300 Wby FN DeLuxe. I never shoot anything in it that I am not sure is safe; and a load that someone else loaded that appears to be at least 5 grains more than any listed load would be broken down into components. How mush is the cartridge worth compared to your health and the rifle? No contest.

    I thoroughly agree with what I'm reading here as there is NO safe reload that someone else did! My possible explanation for this occurrence would be that since the 300 Weatherby Mag has been around long enough to have predated the litigious horse-s**t pressure levels you see in todays modern loading manuals, perhaps the previous owner was going from a 60's vintage loading manual that has higher pressure (powder weights) levels than we see today. I have about 20 loading books around dating from 1956 to 2002 and the ones printed before about 1980 have much lower loads mapped than the old boys do, even when using the same powder and bullet.

    Having said that...I would still likely tear them down for the components. Better safe than dead!
