7.62x53 vs 7.62x54

is it safe to use 7.62x53 brass in all the mosin nagents or just the finnish ones?

  If you are talking about the 7.62x53 Lapua headstamped brass, then yes.

  I've had a nodding relationship with the Mosin 7.62x54R rifles for many years, not in depth, but for a long time now. I've never heard of the 7.62x53. But there are a couple of basics that I think I can say. One rimmed cases headspace mostly on the rim, if the 53 isn't rimmed don't use it, I bet it is or you wound be asking. Also if the case is really 1mm shorter then the 54R then you will likely never be able to resize it back to useable in its original chamber as you will have really worked it when blowing it out to the larger spec. If you have a 53 I would compare it with calipers/drawings and see if it isn't truely a 54R with a different name. Lastly I'd want the spec operating pressures of the two cartridges before I'd go trying it in any just any old warhorse that you might have. The Finnish rifles were really top notch as I understand it. Others should be bye soon with more info........

  The Finns call it 7.62x53R, the Russians call it 7.62x54R and we used to call it plain old 7.62Russian. The case actualy measures 53.5mm, so it can be rounded off both ways.
