HELP 7mm-08

I have purchased a Win mod 70 classic featherweight in 7mm-08. My question is:"What bullet weight was this barrel/rifling built around? The rifling is 1:9.25". I would assume, maybe incorrectly, that Winchester would have a bullet weight in mind that would tend to shoot better than others. I have shot both 120gr and 140gr and can't seem to find the right combination yet. The best groups I have attained are around 2". I would like to narrow it down to bullet weight and go from there. Does anyone know if there is an optimum weight that they used to begin building this rifle/cal combination?

    140-150gr should work best. use premium ammunition,..not cheaper ammo if you want to get the best accuracy. Try the fed prem 140gr NBT load,..it shoots great in mine.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    I worked up a load for a friends Steyr Prohunter in 7-08.It took a few trys ,but 140 grain Ballistic Tips and IMR 4064 with a velocity of just under 2600 fps produced less than half inch groups at 100 yards off a solid rest.

    That is the standard bbl twist rate for 7mm calibers and will handle any of the commonly used bullet weights from 110 gr. thru 175 gr. and in some cases heavier. Some barrels just like different weight bullets even though they are designed for many. -- I had accuracy problems with my W. Classic Featherweight in 30.06 until it got a good action bedding job and free floating the bbl. -- They come from the factory bedded with hot glue and most have the bbl. touching the bbl. channel on the stock on one side or the other. Check yours out ........... good luck.........[8D]

    Sounds like questionable bedding to me. Have your gunsmith rebed the rifle and do a trigger job on it. Also make sure he checks the barrel channel thoroughly. It may also be that that barrel will do better with pressure bedding rather than free floating due to the light contour. Try both ways. My 7-08 loves 140 grain bullets seated over H-Varget or H-4895. But whatever you do, dont get discouraged. The trigger work and rebedding should help out tremendously...then its just a matter of finding that majic potion.

    280AI is right.
    The first thing to do is have someone who knows how,check the stock bedding and glas bed as needed and clean up the bbl. channel.Adjust the trigger and then try any good 140 gr bullet .Nosler bal.tips work most of the time .IMR 4895 usually works but sometimes you have to try several powder / bullet combos to find which works best. This can be fairly expensive and time consuming , but its what you do to get the most out of it. If you dont reload try Federal Premium 140 gr bal. tip load.
