Their is nothing fancy about a Savage, BUT they are one of the most accurate rifles out of the box. I don't think you could wear one out. $500 does seem a little high though. You should be able to get a Blued Synthetic stocked model 111 for about $400.

Thanx for the info Moose, I'm mostly interested in this rifle
because of its light weight and the low cost catches my eye.
I am just concerned as to its field reliability and quality,
cosmetics is not a valid concern for me.

If looks dont bother you then go for it. The savage is the ugliest production rifle out there. But that ugly thing will shoot. They are well known for their accuracy. You didnt state if the rifle had the new accu trigger or not. If it doesnt, replace the factory trigger with a quality aftermarket one. Then go show up all your buddies high priced rifles.[:D].

This item should be no more than $400. The wood guns are fairly ugly but synthetic is "synthetic" in look so all of the makes are the same in looks. I would also look at the Rem 700 ADL synthetic. Im curious why you want this gun to be "light" , its going to jump out of your hands it shes too light.

God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?

I have only three rifles I hunt with. My 30-30 winchester trapper
is a great bush rifle and enough caliber to take any deer I come
across in close. My favorite rifle is my Winchester 30-06 classic
stainless, but its weight is close to 10 pounds with scope. Its a
great rifle for truck hunting and on the quad. But I'm not getting
any younger and chasing elk in the hills bellow the Rocky Mountains
and Bighorn sheep at the top of the mountain is not getting any
easier. This Savage model is very light weight and has the caliber
and range to reach out and touch the game at 300 to 400 yards were
some times you need to be. I am not real concerned with recoil as
the gun will not be fired that often. If I find it too uncomfortable
to shoot I will have a muzzle break made.
Again I was mostly interested in the reliability and reputation of
the Savage ,there are alot of grizzly in the areas I frequent and
maulings are on the rise. So I would assume from these responses that
This rifle would be a good choice.
