barrel stamp mod 1912 when did it change?
what year did winchester go from stamping model 1912 on the barrel to just the plain model 12?
reason im asking is i thought the older nickle steel barrels was stamped 1912 and the proof steel barrels was stamped model 12. But ive found a couple on auction that is stamped nickle steel model 12.
my old mans 12 is stamped nickle steel model 1912.

Hello MC: 1918 Winchester changed from Md 1912 to Md 12. Both were Nickel Steel. Winchester went to "Winchester Proof Steel" in 1931. How ever you will see a few original Nickel Steel guns made, (assembled) during the 1931-34 time frame depending on guage, length, and choke. Winchester did introduce "Stainless Steel" barrels in 1926-31, however they were not well liked because the finish soon wore off. I look at any 'Nickle Steel" Md 12 real close if the serial number tells me it was made after 1931. Over the years, barrels get damaged, and replaced. I did see a "Y" Md 12 with a "Nickel Steel" barrel. The owner had worn out the receiver and sent it back to Winchester for repair. Regards Dave 0 -
