.308 jungle carbine

i have heard that there are some enfield jungle carbines that are chambered in the more popular .308 winchester round.

i am looking at this gun for hunting and maybee just range time.

does anyone know were i can find one or if i can gget a standard barreled .303 JC rebarreled to .308

    There are no, I repeat no, No. 5 Jungle Enfield Carbines in .308 caliber. There was a post two days ago where this was discussed. Go back and read that post.

    Here's why there are no .308 No. 5 rifles. The last No. 5s were manufactured in England in 1947. The .308 was not developed as a cartridge until 1952. The .308 did not exist when the No. 5s were being manufactured. They are all .303 British.

    The only Enfield that manufactured in .308 was from the Ishapore Arsenal in India during the 50s and 60s. Modern steels enabled the Indians to chamber this round in a bolt action Enfield rifle. However, by this time, the rest of the world was using semi-auto .308s or other.

    This rifle is called the 2A or 2A1. They can still be found as military surplus rifles.

    The Gibb's Rifle Company made a conversion as recently as 2002 (don't know if they still do) where a 2A rifle was cut and chopped to ressemble a No. 5 Jungle carbine. However, it is not a Jungle carbine it is a look-alike. It has the distinctive flash hider overall length but the stock (fore end), butt plate, sights, receiver, and barrel are different.

    I don't believe the No. 5 will tolerate the pressures generated by the .308, although I am only guessing at this part. The chamber pressure the .303 British is relatively low maybe like 43,000 CUP compared to the .308 of 58,000 CUP. However, I would not want to be the test animal for that experiment.

    My advice (although you didn't ask for it - Sorry) would be to find a 2A, the Gibb's No. 5 conversion rifle, or learn to like the .303 British. The No. 5 is now a collectors rifle and it would seem a shame to destroy any of them to make a sporter rifle, since they already are a sporter rifle as is.

    A few years ago we had a batch of the full on 2A Enfield in .308 around. I had a yen for a "tanker" style, the conversion was not difficult, I even had most of the metal re-parkerized and the stock redone. The .303 rifles wand to stay that caliber because of metal issues, but you shouldn't have much trouble locating a 2A to convert yourself. Or if a tanker would do email me and I'll shoot you some pictures, I've gotten out of iron sight rifle shooting.

    I had one, bought it for $75 from a friend and gave it to another, friend who likes pain, for free.

    Kicked like a mule!!!!

    Was ok if you were standing but not from the bench.

    I might try one again in 303 though.

    Either one might make a nice truck gun but past that, no thanks!
