Browning A 5 info.

Hi, experts. I just bought a Browning A 5 in 16 ga. and would like some information on it. The serial number is x98083. I believe the "x" in front of the serial number designates it as a 16 ga., but can anyone tell me the date of manufacture? Does the serial number seem correct for this type shotgun? Many thanks Jim

    x never applied to belgian 16ga's, only 20's. is there anything in front of the x? if its just 98083, it would be 1936. you may have a jap 16 ga.

    The 16 ga. "X" Serial Number Series.
    (This is Pre-Sweet 16)
    The "X" Serial number prefix series began with serial number X1001
    that was accepted in the warehouse on January 15, 1947.
    X-1001 Date in Warehouse 1/15/47

    X-92100 Date in Warehouse 6/30/53
    X-99999 Date in Warehouse 9/19/53

    Thus, yours is an X serial number 16 ga Belgium; made in 1953

    The first "S" (Sweet 16) Serial # S-01 was shipped 11/19/53
    and the first "R" (Standard 16) Serial # R-01 was shipped 11/5/53.

    The "X" Serial number for Belgium 20 Ga. Magnums was begun in 1967.

    bj, no problem and glad it helped.
    bobski, as far as "missing" this bit of info.
    I won't even venture to "go there".
    There is probably as much "Mis-information" printed about many guns
    as there is "Correct" information.
    And that doesn't even begin to touch on "Missing-information".
    Not to say that not everybody isn't trying, but there's a lot of this
    that isn't accessable any other way than a lot of digging and record
    keeping.
    Eastman and many others sell books.
    I collect, research, and enjoy Brownings.
    And have access to a lot of Browning info.

    As there is always questions coming up about Double Autos.
    Neat gun and I own a couple in each the DA and Twenty-Weight.
    At out BCA 25th Meeting and Show in Ogden, Utah last year;
    a friend had on display his collection of Double Autos.
    All colors and many prototypes of colors that are one of a kind.
    Unbelievable collection and it won best of show in Shotgun Category.

    I am trying to verify info on a Browning A-5 16 GA. The serial number is 5 digits with no letter 99813. I has the saftey behind the trigger guard however, and I was told that would make it mfg. much later than the 5 digit serial number would indicate.

    Any help would be appreciated

    I have a question for SpringCreek. I recently was given a Browning 12 gauge A5 and the serial number is "4M 33630". I was told it was made in 1954. Is that correct?
