Shepherd scopes- -Pros and cons
Anybody have experience with Shepherd scopes on a hunting rifle? Just wondering what are the pros and cons.

I have one on my M1a. I think they are great. The built in range finder was the deciding factor for me. 0 -
I was serious about one, I have never used one, but several people talked me out of it. It looked good, I loved the ads, sounded good, but everyone (on other boards) was telling me it just was not up to the MIL-SPEC type abuse a real tactical scope should withstand. Was fine for hunting, but not as rugged as a person should expect for serious tactical use. That might translate to dragging it through the mud and snow, considering what some people expect. I can not afford a real high dollar scope, I have been looking at the Supersniper line now, as an option to the Shepard. I have heard the Supersniper is not up to Leupold standards for optics, but is rugged, and for $300, is really up to about the $600 quality level. The Supersniper may be a better option for me, all things considered. You might want to at least look at the Supersniper line before deciding. But heck, I really dont know. The Shepard sure sounds good, at least, in the ads. But look at some options. I just thought I would toss this out to you, as someone else wanting a good M14 or M1A scope, but unwilling to pay 1K for a scope.

I have one, and love it. However the reticle is somewnat confusing at first and takes some getting used to. 
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Shepherd is a very well built scope, and does exactly what is says.
How many companies today can say that?
Many people I have corresponded with about Shepherd's that were negative about it were: Badly misinformed, or....Didn't really have good hands on experience with it, or.....Were basically playing "whisper down the valley", Didn't have it adjusted right, or...Last but not least had a 1st generation that was made by Hakko (makes Springfield Armory) which didn't hold up.
Dan Shepherd either fixed them, or replaced them at N/C out of his pocket because Hakko didn't reimburse him. Shepherd fired Hakko, and Hakko paid Dan back by has violating Shepherd's patent.
Put it aside of a similar priced Leupold, and not only will you have a far superior RANGING and BULLET DROP COMPENSATION patented design that Leupold and many others don't have because it's patented, but it's sight picture was ALWAYS sharper.
Leupold just started indexing lenses on the VXIII, and it may now be equal in resolution, but still doesn't have the reticle design.
Do a search on GB, and learn the truth. Try one and you'll be pleasntly surprised.

Last year I took a Shepherd scope in trade. It had been painted to look like a camo job, had holes drilled in the front bell for attachment of a sun shade and the power ring would not turn. I sent it to Shepherd to see if they could repair the power ring and Mr. Shepherd called to say that the scope was too far gone to repair; however, he wanted my credit card number so he could charge me for return of the scope; an unusual request but I did as asked. About two weeks later the scope was returned. Upon opening the box there was a NEW scope along with a receipt for $5.00 for shipping and a full warranty. Additionally, he had included charts for the cartridge and loading I wanted to use. The scope performs flawlessly and exactly as advertised. I still perfer my Leupolds but the Shepherd is very high on my list. My personal feelings are that anyone who has dealings with this company will be satisfied. 0 -
You can believe what Guns & Glass tells you. Shepards are fine scopes and perform as advertised. If there is any con, and for me there is, it is that the sight picture takes some getting used to. I just find them to "cluttered" for my likeing. That may well be a purely idiosyncratic opinion, but be sure to get some hands on before spending the money. If it does not bother you, you will have a fine scope. 0 -

I'm with Ron Snow-Shepard is a fine company, and the only one that advertises a one shot zero, that works. Like everyone else said, it takes some getting used to, but once you have achieved that, you will love it.
Best hunting scope that I have ever owned!

I've got 2, one on my M1A, and one on my 300 Weatherby. Great for hunting, super optics. Try one, you'll like 'em!!
