Unusual Winchester stamping?

I went to an auction yesterday and bid on an Inland M1 Carbine....I was fortunate and won the auction for an excellent price. When I took possession of the rifle I discovered that the M1 was a Winchester! I then noticed extra writing above : "WINCHESTER" I removed the rear sites and noticed the letters TER in typical Winchester script directly above the the letters TER in the full Winchester rolled name. It "appears" that the factor started to roll the Winchester name too high onto the reciever, stopped and then rolled the full name down lower. The 3 letters TER are deep and sharp. Has anyone ever seen this before? Thanks

    Welcome to the forum machone! Over the last 35 years, I've looked at a lot of Winchesters. (mostly shotguns) and have seen where the roll die had some imperfections, usually the bottom portion of an "E" being worn or missing. Since the marking if a barrel or receiver is one of the last manufacturing operations done prior to blueing, the part has quite a bit of value at this point. I don't think you will find a "commercial" Winchester that left the factory this way, but during the war years, especially 43,44, and 45 there was a lot of pressure to meet the contract requirements and get the guns shipped to the military.

    Over the years I've worked for a few government contractors, and a simple error in I.D. marking was not cause to scrap the part out. You just remarked it correctly. (of course with the proper authorization) Is it worth more, maybe to some, but it is interesting!! Regards Dave
