Round Butting?

I have a 681 with a square butt. My gunsmith says that converting it to round butt does not hurt the strength or integrity of the frame. Is this true, does anybody know? It seems to me that any time you start cutting on the frame, it would weaken it. Is there enough metal in the 681 frame to allow for such a modification without negatively affecting strength of the revolver? Any help here would be appreciated.[:)]

  Virtually all the S&Ws now use the L frame round butt, so there is obviously no weakening of the frame.

  Do one of two things; take the grips off of your 681 or look at this diagram of the 681.

  See all of the extra material on the rear lower portion of the grip frame? The idea is to remove just the minimum of material to accommodate the new round butt grips. There are even patterns for doing this or just use the new grips. It's a common practice to do this conversion and it is safe as long as the person doing it knows when to stop...
