B'Day Gift Time S&W 22S vs Ruger MKII
You pro's have helped me participate in the "gun-a-month" club, but it's my son's turn for a NEW pistol. I've got about 3 weeks to buy, but would like some feedback on the pro's and con's of both pistols before then.
This would be for target and plinking. 22lr only. Accuracy, reliability, and ease of maintenance are primary concerns.

I prefer the Buckmark. Simple cleaning, Browning quality and reliability. Of the two you mention, from what I hear the Ruger is a bear to clean.

I thought about the Buck Mark, but I already have a Challenger II. I want something a little heavier like the 22S or MK II. 0 -
Either will meet the criteria you mentioned. The MKII is more difficult to clean until you get the hang of it. After that, no big deal.
I think the Ruger wins out overall for accuracy out of the box.

I would consider the new Ruger Mark III(3)has a better mag. release (side) and comes with a Weaver scope Base Adapter.The price is about $20.00 more.[:)]

A Ruger Mark 1,Mark 2,or the New Mark 3.
A proven design for over 50 years.They shoot well right out of the box.Factory parts are easy and cheap to get. More aftermarket parts than any other pistol except the 1911 type of pistol.Every type of grips you can think of is made for them. A little trouble the first few times you disassamble them.New or low milage ones are the hardest to take apart and put back together because everything is so tight.Many barrel lenths including bull and tapered.Lots of written information on them.Quit wasting time reading this,and go buy a Ruger.

I would say the MKII, I have a 5.5 inch bull barrel model, shoots great. I know some people say the ruger is hard to take apart and put back together. I haven't ever had a problem with mine, just takes a few times to get the hang of it. I put a red dot scope on mine, and now thats fun!

Has anybody heard about a problem with the loaded chamber indicator on the MK III????? 0 -
The Ruger will also hold it's value better down the line. Used ones get snapped up quick around here.

Ruger Mark II and the only reason i say the Mark II over the Mark I is because the action will stay open after firing the last shot which would be nice for a young person, ,,, I have heard and read there is a problem with the new Mark III and its loaded chamber indicator - which rests on the rim of the shell , which if drop could cause it to discharge , go with the Mark II , 0 -
I wouldnt get a Mark III, because as JIM stated there is a problem with the loaded chamer idicator(besides it being an eye sore). Hmmmmmmmmm...basically it is a "lever" that lays on hte rim of the case[:0], so never drop it[;)]
Oh yeah, and get the MKII.

I've had my MKII for about 20 years and it's still my "go-to" woods side-arm and plinker. I'm seriously eyeing (and waiting for) their new MKIII in .17hm2 ...SA-WWWWEEEEEETTT! Hurry up, RUGER! [8D]
