What's A Good AR-15 Kit?

I've been looking around for AR-15's and so far the price has been mostly around the $800 range. I've heard that nice kits can be picked up for around $400 and $100 for the receiver.

Are parts kits any good for their price? If so, can someone please suggest a kit and maybe a link to a website?

    Try www.jtdistributing.com , Model 1 sales has been taking a pounding on the www.ar15.com board. Many peole are unhappy with their service and delivery. also try www.del-ton.com they have ood prices and service. www.eaglefirearms.net, good service and prices.

    I disagree. Model One Sales has horrible customer service. I had them hang up on me one time. Their sister company(M&A parts) has had an employee assault a customer. Take a look at www.ar15.com everyone and I mean everyone is anti-model one sales. They suck. Period. I would definately go with www.jtdistributing.com Very helpful people and are willing answer any questions you may have. I just bought a CAR upper kit from them and am very pleased.

    Couple questions:

    What's the difference between the 16" C.A.R. and the M4 C.A.R.?

    Does the receiver come with the kit (I'm new to this thing)
    (if no) Can I buy the receiver from the same place that sells the kits?

    As you can see, I'm looking at the carbines, is there any particular one you guys would suggest?

    Im not as up to date on the difference on the m4 and the CAR. However, if you take a look at an m4 barrel you can see where the barrel is thinner. This is for mounting a grenade launcher...mostly for looks for us guys...[:(!] Also, the m4 carbine handrails are "fatter" than the CAR which is better for shooting full auto...which i doubt you'll be doing. The CAR handguards better fit my small hand.
    Recievers DO NOT come with the Kit. The reciever is considered a firearm and have to go through an FFL. Most companies who sell kits dont sell the reciever, also called a lower. Lowers can be bought for 85-200bucks.

    I like the CAR Carbine cause of the looks. I like the oldschool look myself.

    Do our self a favor, check out www.eaglefirearms.net for your receiver. The stag receivers are getteing excellent reviews from ar15.com, I just got one from them and it is outstanding. You will need to have an ffl dealer in your area send a copy of their license to eagle before they can ship.

    Go with jtdistributing.com for the kit.


    As far as the m4- car diffrence. If you search this site. Mark C. posted a bunch of pictures in response to this question that I asked about amonth or so ago. He had pictures of each type of setup and an explination of each.

    JT makes great kits, and the model 1 sales kit I helped a friend put together was equally good. You can get a Standard CAR kit from JT for $465 shipped, and a stripped lower for about $100 + shipping and transfer fees. You should be able to build a gun for around $600 and you will know how the thing works a little better if you assemble the lower yourself (the upper half comes assembled). The lower takes about 1 hour to assemble and directions are on AR15.com. M4 barrels have different feed ramps that are supposed to be more reliable, but that's pretty controversial and every standard barrel I've seen has been fine with standard feed ramps. M4's have the barrel profile for mounting the M203 grenade launcher (already mentioned) and a 6 position stock (reg CAR is 4 position). I'd say the standard CAR is a better deal; they work just as well and are not much different than the M4. The biggest difference is the price. I'd get a JT kit as I have never once heard of a dissatisfied customer, but I think you will be fine with model 1 too.
