a few questions about a 760 remington

My grandfather just gave me his deer rifle since he is just about ready to call it quits for hunting. its a 760 remington gamemaster, in .300 savage. I know he has taken down a hell of a lot of deer with it, but I wanted some oppinions as far as accuracy of the gun and the takedown power of the round....


The only rounds I have been able to find locally is the remington core lokt in 150 and 180 grain, any thoughts on which one to choose. is the 180 enough to take an elk at 100-200 yards?

Also I will never sell this gun since it is now an heirloom but I would be interested to know about how much it might be worth in good used but hunters condition. as far as I know it is a bit rare being the .300 savage only made from I think 1952-60...

    welcome to the forum dustin. the 760, while not a target quality rifle, is more than adiquite for hunting. the .300 sav. is almost equal to the .308 win. and a good deer cartridge. while maybe a little light for elk it will still do the job at the ranges you mentioned. I'd recomend the 150's for deer and the 180's for bigger game. The 760 will never be a collectors gun (never say never?), so keep it clean and oiled and hunt with it.

    If your grandpa got by with it you will too. Although I would recommend something heavier for elk, the 300Savage will stop a deer in its tracks if you do your part.

    Dustin, I've killed many deer with the .300 savage MY grandfather gave me almost 30 years ago! An old Model 99 Savage, used almost exclusively 150 gr core-lokt pointed soft-point until I found a guy who now makes 110 gr soft point and hollow point loads for me. Get ahold of him, tell him what you want and LISTEN to what he says! Treat that Grandfather and rifle with the respect they deserve, one has already shown you his love and the other will care for for a long time to come. P.S. Take the time to learn about the .300 Savage chambering, you'll enjoy what you learn!!!

    I have killed many deer and several elk with the .300S. It is no slouch if used with some common sense. If you handload, 150-180 grain bullets work well. I am partial to 165 grain bullets. It is a great cartridge. All the super magnums do is ruin a lot of meat.

    The rifle and the cartridge have been getting it done since 1952. Hand loading really makes the old Savage shine in the 760 . I'll never part with mine . The .300 Savage would be a perfect youth caliber if someone were smart enough to chamber for it ! It has a couple of little quirks when handloading , but they are not an issue if you know them ! Two years ago I shot my buck with my Granddad's old Rem. Mod. 14 in .30 Rem. . What a great feeling , you'll love it !

    300 savage is a fine classic round. Designed to come close to and compete with the -06. Use 150's for deer and 180's for elk and black bears. I have been on lots of elk hunts and they go down easy with correct bullet placement - they don't wear kevlar. As to the rifle - Range work will tell you how far you can shoot it but 200yds should be in the bag.
