Hunting with a Vaquero .45

Hello!
I recently purchased a Ruger Bisley Vaquero in .45 LC.
Is it good for putting down hogs? The ones in our area go around 100-150 lbs. My .270 has been great, but I sense a change is needed. ( more fun)!
Can you give any range I need to keep in mind?

    I would use the CorBOn 265 or 300 grain JSP at 1300 FPS, that will do the job. Or, PMC makes a +P load in 45 Colt, a 300 grain JSP at 1275 FPS, about $24 for a box of fifty, compared to CorBon $25 for a box of 20! The Bisley grip frame really tames the recoil of the +P loads! Great revolver, great caliber!

    Heavy slugs at those velosities shed energy quick, I'd be thinking in feet not yards when talking range of shot. Mostly I'd want to know what velosity the bullet had to have to preform properly and open as well as penetrate. This will depend on the bullet loaded and your barrel length. Have fun....

    Feet, not yards? I don't get it. Are you saying that 300 Grain JSP at 1300 FPS will not kill a pig past a few feet??? I would bet that it would put a hog down out to 75 yards with no problem.

    I have one in .44mag and I took my white tail deer with it 3 years ago. It was about a 50 yard shot and I was using handloaded 240gr semi jacketed hollow points. I love my Bisley.

    I ment that a 150foot is a good pistol shot, where as 150yd shot may do the job if everything is perfect, but.....

    I gonna keep shots under 50 yards. I have been shooting at the range and think that would be best. I will locate some 300 grain loads and check performance first.

    Just my opinion, but a good heavy flat nosed solid lead bullet is the way to go.
    I shoot 300gr Bull-X hard cast out of my Anaconda 6" and it will usually drill right on through both shoulders with lights out time happening very quick.
    I'm only loading them to about 900 fps, and your Vaquero should be able to handle close to that
    I shot a 200#er with a 250 gr XTP HP out of the same gun three times before she wanted to quit. One stayed in the closest shoulder plate, and the other two were on the off side still in the fat.
    I once did the same thing with a 454 Casull using the same weight XTP, and didn't care for the results..sooooo..
    Now I only use the 300 gr hard cast in that one too when I'm hunting bacon.
