Shot size

Hi, can somebody explain to me what shot size is reccomended for what, for clay shooting. I am currently using size 7 1/2, , what would bigger or smaller shot result in? What would you reccoment for me, im using a Hoppes clay throwing machine, it throws em about 60 yards before i shoot it. Thanks

    Don't go above 7 1/2, especially if you plan to shoot at clubs, as most won't allow anything bigger. I shoot most of my targets with 8's, simply because they're cheaper. Smaller shot gives a more dense pattern, but loses energy faster. At 60 yards, stick with what you've got.

    If you're shooting Trap-style claytargets - then I'd say 7-7? in shotsize.

    If you're shooting Skeet-style claytargets - then I'd say 9.

    You can get some cartridges with mixed shotsizes - 7's and 9's, it's more of an allround cartridge, but it's slightly higher prized.
    You might as well go with 8's.

    I shot claytargets, both trap and skeet with 7's.
    Worked fine for me.
    Even at 60 yards.

    hoppes throwers dont throw them regualtion speed and or very far. what you are using is fine. or, try 8's and modified choke to do the best.

    I dont really mind about regulation. I am just doing this with my dad on the weekends for fun, im not really gonna get seroius about it, maby just buy a little better quality thrower.. to simplify things. THank you for all of your help.

    As most every one will say, 71/2 shot is a good one to use for what your doing.
    If your going to purchase a new thrower you might want to check out the Do-All thrower thats in the new Cabelas catalog. I just got the one that goes into the rear reciever hitch, or it can use the 4 legs that are included, and it's the best so far. it will throw the clays birds at a lot of different angles, and will even throw the rabbits when you change the easy to do adjustments.
    Even has a seat with it.. for $114.00

    what i meant by regulation is, if its not going 65mph out the trap, 8's will be fine because you have more reaction time. if it were regulation youd need 7 1/2's to reach out and hit them.
